GREENSBORO, N.C. (March 21, 2024) – At the halfway point of the 2024 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championship, the Denison University men are in 12th place in the team standings with 78 points. With 10 events in the books, Emory University has moved into first place with a 37-point lead in the team standings with 214 total points. Kenyon College sits in second with 177 points while the University Chicago is in third with 167 points, followed by New York University (164), Williams College (154.5), Calvin University (108), Tufts University (92.5), Carnegie Mellon University (89), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (86), MIT (84) and TCNJ (81).
Denison started the day with a time of 1:22.46 and an 18-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay by
Patrick Daly,
Elijah Venos,
Devin Testin and
Richie Stewart, moving the Big Red back to ninth place with 59 points.
After not reaching the final in the 200 freestyle relay, Denison rebounded by putting three swimmers into the B Final of the 400 IM and moving up to eighth place with 68 points.
Max Soja (3:54.63) was ninth in the prelims while
Gavin Jones (3:55.8) and
Lucas Conrads (3:55.91) were 15th and 16th, respectively. Then in the finals, Soja (3:57.08) Jones (3:57.13) and Conrads (3:57.79) finished in order between 13th and 15th place. For Jones, it was his second straight 14th-place finish in the event while for Conrads, it was his third straight Second-Team All-American finish.
Unfortunately, the Big Red did not have anybody advance to the finals in the 100 butterfly or the 200 freestyle for the third year in a row, moving them back to 10th place.
Dylan Escano was 31st in the 100 butterfly at 49.65 seconds while in the 200 freestyle,
Sam Myaard (1:38.99) was 20th,
Tyler Distenfeld (1:39.41) was 27th and
Christian McIntire (1:39.48) was 28th.
Laslty, Denison's 400 medley relay team of Testin, Venos, Escano and Daly finished 13th in the prelims with a time of 3:16.91 before moving up one spot to 12th place with a time of 3:17.03 in the finals.
Denison will return to the Greensboro Aquatic Center on Friday to compete in the 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 1-meter dive and the 800 free relay. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with finals starting at 6 p.m.
