GRANVILLE, Ohio (February 4, 2024) – The No. 27 Denison University men's squash team finished its regular season by going a perfect 4-0 with four 9-0 sweeps in the inaugural Big Red Invitational this weekend. Denison swept Indiana University twice on Friday, defeated the University of Michigan on Saturday, and then wrapped up the weekend with a win over Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday.
Denison won 35 of its 36 individual matches on the weekend by a score of 3-0. Leading the way with perfect 4-0 individual records were
Jackson Bragman,
Jack Jones,
Gus Nelson and
Lucas Piller. Piller was 3-0 at the No. 3 seed and earned a win at the No. 2 seed in the second match against Indiana while Bragman was 3-0 at the No. 5 seed.
In addition,
Juan Felipe Hernandez and
Suryansh Agrawal went 3-0 at the No. 1 and No. 9 seeds, respectively, while
Charlie Fenwick was 2-0 at the No. 2 seed and
Tarun Mammen was 2-0 between the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. Fenwick's win at the No. 2 seed over CMU was a 3-2 (11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 7-11, 11-7) decision.
Friday marked the first two matches between Denison and Indiana since the Big Red transitioned to varsity status. The match against Michigan was Denison's first against the Wolverines after falling 5-4 during the first full varsity season for the Big Red back in 2021-22. On that day, Denison won at each of the top-four seeds but came up short in the bottom-five positions. Lastly, the win over Carnegie Mellon represented a two-point improvement from last season when the Big Red hosted and defeated the Tartans by a score of 7-2 and swept all seven seeds that were in action.
Denison concludes its 2023-24 regular season with a record of 9-6, which is good for the most wins in a single season in the first three full years of the program's existence.
With the postseason up next, the Big Red will prep for the start of the Liberty League Championship, scheduled for February 9-11 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. This year, the Liberty League features seven teams, including Denison, Bard, Haverford, Hobart, Rochester, St. Lawrence, and Vassar.
