Men's Squash

No. 28 men’s squash splits first four matches of 2024

CARLISLE, Pa. (January 21, 2024) – The No. 28 Denison University men's squash team began a stretch of four matches in three days to open its 2024 schedule with 8-1 loss to Brown University before bouncing back with a narrow 5-4 victory No. 30 Connecticut College on Friday at Fordham University. The Big Red then rolled to a 9-0 win against No. 34 Bard College in New York on Saturday before finishing off the road trip with a 9-0 defeat to No. 8 nationally-ranked the University of Virginia at Dickinson College on Sunday.

Chase Lenfest earned Denison's lone win against Brown with a 3-1 (13-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-9) decision at the No. 6 seed while Juan Felipe Hernandez lost a five-setter (10-12, 11-6, 9-11, 11-3, 11-5) at the No. 1 seed and Rayan Dar did the same (11-7, 11-3, 9-11, 4-11, 13-11) in the No. 7 spot. Jackson Bragman lost each of his first two sets by only two points (11-9, 12-10, 11-6) at the No. 8 spot while Jack Jones forced a 16-14 decision in the first set of his 3-0 loss at the No. 9 seed.

Then in the one-point win over Connecticut College, Denison earned 3-1 wins from Hernandez (9-11, 11-1, 11-4, 11-6) at the No. 1 seed, Charlie Fenwick (11-9, 5-11, 11-6, 11-8) at the No. 4 seed, and Lenfest (10-12, 11-3, 11-4, 11-8) at the No. 6 seed. To clinch the win, Bragman (11-7, 11-6, 11-1) and Jones (11-1, 11-4, 11-5) earned a pair of 3-0 wins at the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds, respectively. It was the first win for the Big Red against the Camels in four matches between the two teams over the last three seasons.

Playing as the No. 3 seed against Bard, Ross Falcon gave up only two points in his 3-0 (11-0, 11-1, 11-1) win while Gus Nelson (No. 8 seed) and Suryansh Agrawal (No. 9 seed) each picked up the win in their first time playing in the top-9 this season. In addition, Lucas Piller defeated Artemy Mukhin in five sets (11-5, 5-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-7) at the No. 1 seed.

Closing out the weekend against a top-10 team in the country in Virginia, Hernandez (No. 1 seed), Bragman (No. 8 seed) and Jones (No. 9 seed) all won 15 points across their three sets while Denison's closest match came from Tarun Mammen (11-3, 12-10, 11-6) at the No. 2 seed.

Next up, Denison will host the Big Red Invitational on Saturday, February 3, and Sunday, February 4.
