Women's Swimming and Diving

No. 1 Big Red dominate the competition

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (January 13, 2024) – The No. 1 nationally-ranked Denison University women's swimming & diving team won 12 of the 16 events, set eight pool records, defeated No. 10 Johns Hopkins University 227-67, and defeated both No. 17 Carnegie Mellon University and No. 18 Calvin University by a score of 241-59 on Saturday at the CMU Quad Meet.

Lu-Si Minnich won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events while Emily Harris won the 200 butterfly with a new Denison varsity record and also earned the win in the 200 backstroke.

To start things off, Denison took each of the top two-spots in the 200 medley relay as Jassy Park, Riley Tofflemire, Amber Croonquist and Grace Kadlecik earned the win with a pool record time of 1:43.29 while Claire Moody, Drue Thielking, Maja Palmroos and Phoebe Ferguson were over a second behind at 1:44.81. Both times were good for an NCAA Division III National "B" cut.

The Big Red then finished in order between second and fourth place in the 1000 freestyle as Tara Witkowski (10:10.22) was second, Taryn Wisner (10:12.04) was third and Quinn Brown (10:12.93) was fourth.

Esme Wright set both a National "B" cut and a pool record to win the 200 freestyle, swimming a time of 1:51.68, while Annie Pfeufer was second at 1:52.56.

In the 100 backstroke, Park (57.54) was second, Courtney McKeown (59.18) was fourth, Claire Moody (59.93) was sixth and Sophie Kannee (1:00.25) was eighth.

Tofflemire finished first in the 100 breaststroke with a national "B" cut time of 1:02.71 while Thielking was right behind her in second place at 1:04.54.

Harris set a varsity record, "B" cut and a pool record to win the 200 butterfly at 2:00.92 while Emma Pritchett (2:05.20), who also set a "B" cut, Nikki Barnas (2:06.83), and Maria Mrosko (2:08.20), each took the next three spots.

For the second event in a row, Denison set a pool record as Kadlecik won the 50 freestyle with a time of "B" cut time of 23.50 seconds while Palmroos (23.96) and Croonquist (24.00) swept the next two spots.

Kadlecik (52.41) then got back into the pool and along with Wright (52.55), Pfeufer (52.72) and Ferguson (52.75), finished in order between second and fifth place in the 100 freestyle.

Harris won the 200 backstroke with a "B" cut time of 2:01.60 while McKeown (2:04.92) was third and Park (2:06.11) and Moody (2:07.72) finished back-to-back in fifth and sixth place.

Thielking won the 200 breaststroke with both a "B" cut and a pool record time of 2:18.76 while Tofflemire was third at 2:23.54.

In the 500 freestyle, Witkowski, who finished with a "B" cut of 4:55.84; Wisner, who swam a "B" cut of 4:56.91; and Brown, who finished in 5:00.85, went in order between second and fourth place while Erika Schraber was sixth at 5:09.59.

In the 100 butterfly, Pritchett earned first place with a "B" cut and a pool record time of 55.88 seconds while Palmroos (56.28) was second, Croonquist (56.77) was fourth and Kayle Tehrani (58.68) was seventh.

Ferguson claimed the win in the 200 IM with a "B" cut and a pool record time of 2:04.99 while Rebecca Martin (2:09.14) was third and Thielking (2:09.28) was fourth.

The final event in the pool saw Denison set yet another "B" cut and pool record with Wright, Kadlecik, Harris and Palmroos swimming a time of 1:34.65 to win the 200 freestyle relay.

Lastly, Minnich (246.15), Kerstyn Johnson (233.05) and Alexis Radhakrishnan (233.65) swept the top-three spots in the 1-meter dive while finishing in the same order (Minnich, 258.65; Johnson, 246.05; Radhakrishnan, 238.85) on the 3-meter board.

The Big Red return to action on Saturday, January 20, when they travel to NCAA Division I Youngstown State University.
