Fleming, Fierer named Academic All-Americans®

GRANVILLE, Ohio (June 7, 2023) – College Sports Communicators announced its 2023 Academic All-America® Baseball Teams, and Denison University's Charlie Fleming was named a First-Team Academic All-American® while Ari Fierer was named to the second-team.

Fleming is a senior right-handed pitcher from Upper Arlington, Ohio, who holds a 3.84 cumulative GPA in Health, exercise, and sport studies (HESS) and is also a psychology minor. Fleming was recently named as a Second-Team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and was the ABCA Region 7 Pitcher of the Year. Fleming, who was also the 2021 and 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, was 10-1 on the season with a 2.81 earned run average, a WHIP of 1.07, three complete games and two shutouts in 13 starts and 14 total appearances. In 83.1 innings, Fleming allowed 74 hits, 35 total runs and 26 earned runs while walking just 15 batters and recording 92 strikeouts, which ranks second in program history. For his career, Fleming ranks second in program history in strikeouts (221) and is third in wins (22), tied for fourth in starts (37), sixth in innings pitched (224.0) and ninth in lowest earned run average (3.70). As a senior, Fleming earned three NCAC Pitcher of the Week awards, two nods to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week, and became the program's first NCBWA (National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association) National Pitcher of the Week selection in 18 years after throwing the third no-hitter in program history and the first since 2005 during Denison 14-0 win over Waynesburg University (May 6). Fleming was named to the NCAC All-Tournament Team this season after earning the win in the championship game (7-2 over Wittenberg). Fleming was named this year's recipient of the Dr. Larry Scheiderer Award, which recognizes the highest-ranking senior varsity male scholar-athlete in terms of GPA. Fleming is also a member of Denison's Chi Alpha Sigma chapter (2021-22), is a three-time Denison Top-50 Scholar-Athlete, and is a three-time member of the NCAC Academic Honor Roll. A two-time Academic All-District® selection (2022, 2023), Fleming is a member of Denison's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (DSAAC) and is very involved with Denison's Mission 34 group on campus.

Fierer is a senior utility player (third base, designated hitter, right-handed pitcher) from Denver, Colorado, who has a 3.98 GPA in psychology and is also a Bluegrass minor. Fierer was tabbed as a second-team all-region selection by the ABCA and was named first-team all-conference after hitting .335 as a senior with 41 starts in 43 games. He had 52 hits, nine doubles, seven home runs, six stolen bases and one triple this season and ranked third on the Big Red with 29 walks and a .455 on base percentage. He was also top-four on the team with 47 RBI's, 38 runs scored and a .542 slugging percentage. On the mound, Fierer was 1-0 with five saves, a 2.57 earned run average and 1.19 WHIP in 16 appearances and one start. He allowed 21 hits, 12 total runs, six earned runs, four walks and 13 strikeouts in 21.0 innings. In the NCAA Granville Regional, Fierer hit a two-run home run in Denison's win over Beloit and hit a three-run double in the first game against No. 12 Baldwin Wallace. He then added two hits offensively and pitched the final 2.1 innings while picking up his fifth save of the season and not allowing a single batter to reach base against him in Denison's 7-0 shutout win over Spalding to reach the championship game. Lastly, Fierer was 2-for-4 in the regional championship game against BWU as he had two hits in three of Denison's four games in the regional. Earlier this season during Denison's 25-23 marathon win over Arcadia in Florida, Fierer set a new program record for at bats in a single game with eight and also tied the Denison records of seven RBI's and two home runs in one game. Fierer was also named the NCAC Player of the Week on February 27 after hitting 7-for-10 with five RBI's, four walks, three runs, two stolen bases, a double and a triple during a 3-0 opening weekend for the Big Red at the D3 College Showcase. Fierer was a member of the 2021-22 NCAC Academic Honor Roll, was a 2021-22 Denison Chi Alpha Sigma inductee, and was a 2022-23 Denison Top-50 Scholar-Athlete. At this year's James T. Glerum '82 Top-50 Scholar-Athlete Honors Celebration, Fierer was recognized with the Ted Barclay Top-Five Award.

This brings Denison's count to 115 Academic All-America® winners in school history. In addition, Denison has now had at least one First-Team Academic All-American® in every year since 2016. Created in 1952, the Academic All-America® program, selected by College Sports Communicators, is a premier, nationwide college scholar-athlete awards program. It recognizes over 1,400 outstanding student-athletes annually in Division I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
