No. 14 men’s tennis reaches 20 wins with sweep over Wooster on Senior Day

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 9, 2023) – The No. 14 Denison University men's tennis team swept the College of Wooster during Senior Day on Easter Sunday at the Denison Tennis Courts. The three seniors recognized prior to the start of the match were Jack Bulger, Daniel Garcia and Marc-Lennart Harms.
 
Notable Results:
Doubles Singles
  • Chapides (No. 5 singles), Shah (No. 1 singles), Garcia (No. 6 singles) and Portnoy (No. 4 singles) all won by scores of 6-0, 6-0.
  • The final two matches went to Jacob Patterson and Anthony Payiavlas by scores of 6-0, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
  • Heading into the final week of the regular season, Chapides remained a perfect 18-0 in dual matches while Garcia improved to 6-0 and Portnoy improved to 10-1.
  • In addition, Shah improved to 6-3 at No. 1 singles while Patterson improved to 13-2 overall with six wins at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
 
Senior Day Recap:
  • Jack Bulger has posted career records of 57-17 in singles and 64-22 in doubles, and is 18-5 in singles and 7-3 from the No. 1 position so far this season. He is currently top-six in program history in singles wins and is top-seven in doubles wins. In 2022, Bulger was 17-7 in singles and 10-4 at the No. 2 spot en route to being named Second-Team All-NCAC and earning first-team all-conference honors with a 7-2 record in 2021. In doubles, Bulger was 25-5 overall, including going 22-2 from the No. 1 spot with Tim Cianciola as the pair went on to earn All-American status and were named the NCAC Doubles Team of the Year for the second year in a row. Bulger and Cianciola were the first Big Red duo to reach All-American status since 2006 and were Denison's first-ever back-to-back NCAC Doubles Team of the Year. Bulger and Cianciola were also selected to compete in the 2022 NCAA Doubles Championship, where they became the second Big Red duo ever and the first since 1997 to advance to the quarterfinals. A two-time NCAC Athlete of the Week and member of Denison's Student-Athlete Advisory Council, Bulger was named to the NCAC Academic Honor Roll and was a Denison Top-50 Scholar-Athlete in both 2021 and 2022, was a 2020 ITA Scholar-Athlete, and was a 2022 Denison Chi Alpha Sigma Inductee.
  • Daniel Garcia is 21-10 in singles and 12-3 in doubles. He was 7-2 at No. 6 singles in 2022 and is a perfect 6-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles during dual matches this season. He was named to the NCAC Academic Honor Roll in both 2021 and 2022, was both an ITA Scholar-Athlete and a Denison Chi Alpha Sigma Inductee in 2022, and will now be a two-time Denison Top-50 Scholar Athlete this year.
  • Marc-Lennart Harms has posted career records of 44-20 in singles and 33-16 in doubles, and is 10-10 in singles and 4-0 from the No. 1 spot so far this season. In 2022, Harms finished 25-7 in singles with 10 wins at both the No. 2 and No. 3 positions and was named Second-Team All-NCAC. His 25 singles wins last year also surpassed the previous Denison record of 21 singles wins last reached in 2010. He was also 19-8 overall in doubles in 2022 and was named honorable mention all-conference. A two-time NCAC Athlete of the Week, Harms was an ITA Scholar-Athlete in both 2021 and 2022, was a 2022 Denison Chi Alpha Sigma Inductee, and will now be a two-time Denison Top-50 Scholar Athlete this year.
 
Records:
  • Denison improved to 20-3 overall and 5-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Big Red also improved to 10-0 at home this season and earned their sixth 9-0 sweep in a row.
  • The Big Red are now 27-0 against Wooster (4-10, 0-4) since the 2005 season.
 
Next Up: Denison will close out the regular season with three matches in Indiana next weekend, including two on Saturday, April 15, at Wabash College and Earlham College, both starting at 12 p.m. The Big Red will then wrap up the regular season at DePauw University starting at 12 p.m. on Sunday, April 16.
