MAYFIELD, Ohio (March 25, 2023) – Playing in its first match since its Spring Break trip to Florida, the No. 29 Denison University women's tennis team earned a 7-2 neutral-court win over Sweet Briar College on Saturday at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield, Ohio.
Peyton Oda and
Kendall Schrader rolled to an 8-1 victory over Isabela Guilarte and Maria Caro at No. 3 doubles before
Sydney Cianciola and
Sarah Robertson won 8-3 over Ruth de Souza and Allison Wandling at No. 1 doubles.
In singles,
Monique Brual defeated Wandling 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 3 spot while Robertson won 6-4, 6-3 over Ana Patino in the No. 2 spot to make it 4-1 Big Red.
Then after
Sofia Zafiropulos fell in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 against Guilarte at No. 6 singles, Cianciola clinched the win for Denison with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over de Souza at No. 1 singles.
In the final two matches, the Big Red pulled out a pair of three-set wins as
Caroline Lopez won 0-6, 6-4, 6-4 over Nikhita Simhambhatla in the No. 5 position while Oda defeated Sofia Andrade 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
Denison improved to 9-3 overall with the win while Sweet Briar, which had won six matches in a row before playing No. 12 Case Western Reserve University and Denison on Saturday, fell to 11-5. It was also the first-ever matchup between Denison and Sweet Briar.
Tomorrow (Mar. 26), the Big Red will battle against No. 12 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University at 12:45 p.m. at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Stow, Ohio. The Big Red will have their work cut out for them after the Spartans swept Sweet Briar 9-0 earlier in the day on Saturday.
