MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (February 26, 2023) – The No. 34-ranked and seventh-seeded Denison University men's squash team earned a narrow 5-4 victory over No. 43-ranked and eighth-seeded Fordham University during day three of the College Squash Association National Collegiate Men's Team Championship on Sunday. With the win, the Big Red finished in seventh place out of 10 teams in the Conroy Cup.
The Big Red fell behind 3-1 to start but got a 3-0 (11-3, 12-10, 11-3) win by
Tarun Mammen and the No. 2 seed.
Denison then saw
Lucas Piller earn a hard-fought 3-2 (11-9, 11-6, 10-12, 11-13, 11-5) win at the No. 4 seed while
Juan Felipe Hernandez won 3-0 (11-5, 11-1, 11-4) at the No. 1 seed to make it a 4-3 Big Red deficit.
After dropping his first set 11-7,
Rayan Dar battled back to win 3-1 (7-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-3) at the No. 5 seed to tie the match up at 4-4.
That set the stage for
Huma Bekhiet at the No. 3 seed, who proceeded to win 3-0 (11-5, 11-2, 11-8) to clinch the win for the Big Red.
During Denison's four matches throughout the weekend in the Conroy Cup division, the Big Red were led by Hernandez with a 4-0 record while Mammen and Piller were both 3-1.
The Big Red finished their 2022-23 schedule with an 8-10 record. Next up, the College Squash Association Individual Championships are scheduled for March 3-5 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
