MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (February 25, 2023) – During day two of the College Squash Association National Collegiate Men's Team Championship, the No. 34-ranked and seventh-seeded Denison University men's squash dropped a 6-3 decision against No. 33-ranked and sixth-seeded Connecticut College during the semifinals of the Conroy Cup Consolation Bracket.
Juan Felipe Hernandez improved to 3-0 over the weekend with a 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-9) win at the No. 1 seed to get the Big Red on the scoreboard down 2-1.
Then down 3-1, Denison got a pair of five-sets wins by
Tarun Mammen (11-5, 8-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9) at the No. 2 seed and by
Lucas Piller (11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 15-13, 12-10) at the No. 4 seed as both players won by just two points in the fifth set.
From there, however,
Huma Bekhiet fell 3-2 (11-5, 6-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-9) at the No. 3 seed and
Joao Victor Barbosa Gomes lost 3-0 (11-5, 11-9, 11-7) at the No. 6 seed to give Connecticut College the win.
Denison fell to 7-10 while Connecticut College improves to 6-12. Denison's next opponent will be No. 43-ranked and eighth-seeded Fordham University (19-10) in the 7/8 playoff on Sunday, February 26, at 8:30 a.m. The Big Red have defeated the Rams three times in the last two seasons, including an 8-1 win earlier this season at the Navy Round Robin.
