No. 29 men’s squash upsets No. 28 Wesleyan in PA

LANCASTER, Pa. (December 3, 2023) – Playing in three matches in three days in Pennsylvania, the No. 29 Denison University men's squash team dropped a hard-fought 6-3 decision on the road at No. 27 Dickinson College on Friday night at the Kline Squash Center. Then at Franklin and Marshall College's Mayser Center, the Big Red earned a 5-4 upset victory over against No. 28 Wesleyan University in neutral-court action on Saturday before falling 9-0 against the hosts from No. 19-ranked F&M on Sunday.

Match 1 (Denison 3, Dickinson 6):
  • Denison's wins came at the No. 6, No. 7, and No. 9 seeds as Dickinson picked up wins in each of the first five spots. Chase Lenfest won his first two sets 11-3 and 11-6 before needing to earn an 11-7 win in the fifth set to finish off the win at the No. 6 seed. Ross Falcon won 3-0 and earned a 12-10 win in the third set at the No. 7 seed while Rayan Dar won 3-0 and won 12-10 in the first set at the No. 9 seed.
  • Denison suffered two five-set defeats that could have turned the tide of the match as Lucas Piller won his first two sets 11-6 and 11-1 before coming up short, 11-3, 11-4 and 11-7 in the next three sets at the No. 5 seed.
  • At the No. 1 seed, Juan Felipe Hernandez won his fourth set 11-9 to force a fifth set, but then Joe Smythe reversed the score on him with an 11-9 win himself to clinch the victory for Dickinson.
  • In the third slot, Huma Bekhiet defeated Mark Naguib 11-8 in set one before being limited to just 14 total points over the next three sets.
  • Denison fell to below .500 on the season at 2-3 but played much stronger against a Dickinson (3-3) squad that defeated the Big Red 8-1 last season.

Match 2 (Denison 5, Wesleyan 4):
  • The unsung hero for Denison was Dar, who moved up one spot in the lineup to the No. 8 seed and found himself down 2-0 to start before pulling out narrow 13-11 and 11-9 wins in the final two sets to earn the 3-2 victory.
  • The clinching win for Denison came from Hernandez in 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-3) fashion at the No. 1 seed.
  • Tarun Mammen (No. 2 seed) and Piller (No. 5 seed) both earned 3-1 victories while Jackson Bragman won 3-0 (12-10, 11-1, 11-5) in his return to the lineup at the No. 9 seed.
  • It was another sign of improvement for Denison (3-3), which fell 7-2 at Wesleyan (2-4) last season.

Match 3 (Denison 0, Franklin and Marshall 9):
  • Bragman was able to win a set at the No. 9 seed against a strong F&M team and had a good showing overall after dropping the final two sets by just two points each, falling 3-1 (11-4, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9) against Juanber Hinostroza.
  • Dar fell 11-9 in each of his first two sets at the No. 8 seed, Falcon fell 14-12 in his first set at the No. 7 seed, Piller dropped his second set by a score of 12-10 at the No. 5 seed, and Bekhiet lost 12-10 in his first set at the No. 3 seed.
