Women's Swimming and Diving

No. 3 women’s swimming & diving streaks past No. 1 Kenyon

GRANVILLE, Ohio (November 4, 2023) – In a matchup between two of the top-three women's swimming & diving teams in NCAA Division III, No. 3 Denison won eight of 16 events, including a win on both the one-meter and three-meter diving boards by Kerstyn Johnson, and raced to a 167-133 victory over No. 1 Kenyon College in their annual dual meet on Saturday inside the Trumbull Aquatics Center. It was Denison's first dual meet win against Kenyon since 2019.

Denison took an early 13-4 lead after the first event as Liv Chow, Riley Tofflemire, Phoebe Ferguson and Grace Kadlecik finished first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.01 while Jassy Park, Drue Thielking, Maja Palmroos and Esme Wright were third at 1:45.14.

Denison followed that up by taking four of the top-five spots in the 1000 freestyle as Quinn Brown earned the win with a time of 10:28.28 while Tara Witkowski (10:36.45) was second, Taryn Wisner (10:44.93) was fourth and Erika Schraber (10:45.23) was fifth.

That made it a 20-point (28-8) Big Red lead before Wright and Annie Pfeufer finished back-to-back in second and third place with times of 1:55.00 and 1:55.73, respectively, in the 200 freestyle.

Park and Chow finished back-to-back in second and third place with times of 57.14 seconds and 58.42 seconds, respectively, in the 100 backstroke.

Denison again finished back-to-back in second and third place as Tofflemire (1:05.42) and Thielking (1:05.78) did so in the 100 breaststroke while Zoe Barclay added a fifth-place time at 1:08.18.

Emily Harris brought home a win with a time of 2:07.92 in the 200 butterfly while Nikki Barnas was fourth at 2:11.32.

Kenyon took a momentary one-point lead (66-65) after taking four of the top-five spots in the 50 freestyle. For the Big Red, Kadlecik was third at 24.23 seconds while Palmroos was sixth at 24.81 seconds.

On the diving boards, Denison swept each of the top four spots in the 1-meter dive to grow its lead back out to double digits at 81-69. Johnson earned the win with a score of 253.95 while Molly McIntyre was second at 227.70, Lu-Si Minnich was third at 221.85, and Alexis Radhakrishnan was fourth at 217.95.

The two teams then got back into the pool after a break and saw Ferguson (53.50) and Wright (53.51) finish in second and third place, respectively, in the 100 freestyle while Pfeufer (54.22) was fifth, Avery Vogen (54.23) was sixth, Kadlecik (54.28) was seventh and Natalie English (54.72) was eighth.

Denison then grew its lead back out to 18 points at 103-85 as Park won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:05.57 while Chow was third at 2:08.38 and Claire Moody was fourth at 2:09.65.

Thielking (2:21.29), Tofflemire (2:27.04) and Barclay (2:28.87) finished in order between second and fourth place in the 200 breaststroke.

Brown and Harris finished back-to-back in second and third place in the 500 freestyle with times of 5:07.01 and 5:07.92, respectively.

Then after taking three of the top-four spots in the 100 butterfly, Denison's lead grew to 21 points (133-112) as Ferguson picked up the win with a time of 57.45 seconds while Amber Croonquist was third at 58.24 seconds and Emma Pritchett was fourth at 58.61 seconds.

Then in the 3-meter dive, Johnson made it a clean sweep of the diving boards with a score of 242.18 while McIntyre was second at 225.15 and Minnich was third at 223.50.

That made it 149-115 Denison heading into the final two events in the pool, and then the Big Red made it 161-122 going into the final event as Wright won the 400 IM with a time of 4:32.70 while Witkowski was third at 4:36.34.

In the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, Kadlecik, Harris, Ferguson and Vogen finished second at 3:31.58 while Pfeufer, Brown, Croonquist and Chow were third at 3:35.85.

The Big Red will return to the pool on Friday, November 10, at Ohio State University.
