GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 28, 2023) – No. 7 nationally-ranked Denison University men's swimming suffered a 142-120 loss to NCAA Division I Xavier University on Saturday afternoon at the Trumbull Aquatics Center in Granville, Ohio. Denison had five first-place finishes, but it would not be enough as the Big Red fell to the Musketeers for just the third time in the nine years of their current annual dual meet. Freshman
Liam Nelson led the Big Red with a pair of wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
The meet was kicked off with the 200 medley relay as Denison put three groups into the top-four.
Nicholas Settembrine, Nelson,
Christian Narcelles and
Richie Stewart worked together to finish second at 1:33.75 while
Devin Testin,
Elijah Venos,
Max Soja and
Luke Dauer were third at 1:34.70 and
Shea Card,
Teak Rommaneekochchakorn,
Dylan Escano and
Cameron Noble were fourth at 1:35.91.
In the first individual event, the 1000 freestyle,
Lucas Conrads and
Luke Landis finished in third and fourth place, respectively, with times of 9:45.69 and 9:50.22.
Christian McIntire took second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:43.24 while Narcelles was fifth at 1:44.41 and
Patrick Daly was sixth at 1:45.73.
Denison's first win of the meet came in the 100 backstroke as Settembrine won it with a time of 51.94 seconds while Testin was fourth at 53.32 seconds.
Then in the 100 breaststroke, Nelson (56.23 seconds), Venos (57.75 seconds), Rommaneekochchakorn (58.46) and
Gavin Jones (58.50) occupied each of the top-four spots as Denison cut its deficit to 50-43.
In the 200 butterfly, Soja was second at 1:54.86 while
Max Lough was fourth at 1:55.34.
Stewart won the 50 freestyle with a mark of 21.47 seconds while Noble was fourth at 21.94 seconds.
In the 100 freestyle, Daly was second at 47.40 seconds, Noble was third at 47.63 seconds and Narcelles was fifth at 47.92 seconds.
In the 200 backstroke, Settembrine was second at 1:56.84, Testin was third at 1:57.05,
Connor Brown was fifth at 1:58.44 and
Luke Swiggett sixth at 1:59.48.
The Big Red took home four of the top-five spots in the 200 breaststroke to get within just four points of the Musketeers at 96-92 as Nelson finished first with a time of 2:05.31 while Rommaneekochchakorn was second at 2:06.75, Jones was third at 2:07.70 and Venos was fifth at 2:10.06.
McIntire followed with a winning time of 4:40.90 in the 500 freestyle while Conrads was third at 4:43.55, but in the 100 butterfly, Stewart (52.57), Escano (52.87) and Lough (52.92) finished third through fifth.
In the final individual event, Jones was second with a time of 1:56.52 in the 200 IM while Narcelles was fourth at 1:57.56, and then Daly, Dauer, Noble and Stewart (3:08.17) finished second together in the 400 freestyle relay.
There were no diving events held during this dual meet.
Denison returns to action next weekend on Saturday, November 4, when they host No. 2 nationally-ranked Kenyon College in a dual meeting beginning at 10 a.m. The meet will be streamed live by the Denison Sports Network beginning at 9:45 a.m.
