AKRON, Ohio (October 13, 2023) – The 2023-24 Denison University men's swimming & diving season got underway on Friday night at the Zips Classic, hosted by the University of Akron at the Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium. The Big Red had at least a top-seven finish in all five swimming events during day one and added a win on the diving boards as well.
Session 1 - Friday, Oct. 13 - 5 p.m.
Denison took each of the seventh, eighth and ninth-place spots in the 400 medley relay, led by freshman
Luke Swiggett, junior
Elijah Venos, freshman
Liam Nelson and senior
Richie Stewart with a time of 3:28.52. Next was freshman
Devin Testin and juniors
Gavin Jones,
Christian Narcelles and
Patrick Daly with a time of 3:30.31 while senior
Nicholas Settembrine, freshman
Luke Dauer, junior
Max Soja and freshman
Cameron Noble finished with a time of 3:31.29.
Denison put together a sixth-place finish in each of the first two individual swimming events of the season, starting with the 500 freestyle as junior
Christian McIntire was sixth with a time of 4:40.63. Just one spot behind in seventh place was fellow-junior
Lucas Conrads (4:41.18), followed by another junior,
Christian Narcelles (4:46.29), in 12th place. Fifth-year senior
Luke Landis (4:47.17) was 14th, followed by senior
Sam Myaard (4:51.94) in 15th, senior
Ryan Foreback (4:53.48) in 16th and freshman
Max Lough (4:54.06) in 17th.
Then in the 200 IM, Daly was sixth with a time of 1:55.03 while Nelson (1:57.60) was 13th, Jones (1:57.79) was 16th, freshman
Teak Rommaneekochchakorn (1:57.93) was 19th, Soja (1:59.39) was 20th and junior
Connor Brown (1:59.70) was 21st.
In the 50 free, Stewart tied for seventh place with a time of 21.36 seconds while Noble tied for 14th at 21.88 seconds. Denison took each of the 17th through 23rd-place spots as well: Dauer (22.00), junior
Dhinal Weerasinghe (22.10), Venos (22.13), freshman
Matt Stankivicz (22.18), sophomore
George Wang (22.29), freshman
Theo Wolfe (22.30) and Settembrine (22.31).
Denison's best finish in the pool during day one came in the 800 freestyle relay as McIntire, Daly, Conrads and Narcelles worked together to finish in fifth place with a time of 7:02.10.
The top performance of the day for the Big Red, however, came on the diving boards as fifth-year
Kristian Kowalski took home first place with a score of 247.10 on the 3-meter diving board (six dives). Sophomores
Nick Fogle (206.20) and
Brendan Stanley (187.30) followed in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
The first meet of the season will be closed out on Saturday, October 14, with two sessions beginning at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
