No. 3 Denison women suffer close loss to Division-II Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (January 7, 2023) – Third-ranked Denison University women's swimming & diving posted seven event victories, but it was not enough to upend the No. 2-ranked team in NCAA Division II, the University of Indianapolis, as the Greyhounds held off the Big Red for a 167-133 win on Saturday afternoon.

In the first individual event of the day, the 1000 freestyle, Quinn Brown (10:25.56), Tara Witkowski (10:32.30) and Taryn Wisner (10:38.67) took each of the top-three spots. Later on, Brown (5:05.27), Witkowski (5:09.76), Wisner (5:11.99) and Annie Pfeufer (5:17.97) occupied each of the top-four spots in the 500 freestyle.

Tara Culibrk won both the 100 freestyle (52.71 seconds) and the 200 freestyle (1:55.38) while Drue Thielking won both the 100 breaststroke (1:06.41) and the 200 breaststroke (2:33.77).

Amber Croonquist earned Denison's final win of the day with a time of 57.98 seconds in the 100 butterfly.

Claire Moody was fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:00.32) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:10.28).

Maria Mrosko (2:12.16), Nikki Barnas (2:14.40) and Emma Berdelman (2:14.91) finished in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively, in the 200 butterfly.

In the 50 freestyle, Croonquist finished fourth with a time 24.97 seconds while Grace Kadlecik and Phoebe Ferguson tied for fifth place at 25.09 seconds.

Esme Wright (2:11.68) and Savannah Sargent (2:13.99) finished in second and third place, respectively, in the 200 IM.

In the relay events, Denison's group of Moody, Thielking, Ferguson and Kadlecik finished third in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.62. In the 200 freestyle relay, Kadlecik, Culibrk, Ferguson and Lauren Young finished second with a time of 1:38.66.

Lastly, Kerstyn Johnson (223.87) and Anya Ferner (217.12) finished in fourth and fifth place in the 1-meter dive while Johnson (230.20), LuSi Minnich (219.00) and Maggie Seftenberg (212.02) finished third, fourth, and fifth, respectively, in the 3-meter five.

Denison returns to the pool next Saturday, January 14, when they host Carnegie Mellon University and Calvin University at 1 p.m. at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
