GRANVILLE, Ohio (January 14, 2023) – Thanks to 10 first-place finishes, the No. 3 Denison University women's swimming & diving team took down No. 11 Carnegie Mellon University 194-106 and No. 19 Calvin University 234-66 in a double dual meet on Saturday at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
Tara Culibrk was victorious in both the 100 freestyle and the 200 freestyle while
Quinn Brown earned the win in both the 500 freestyle and the 1000 freestyle and
Drue Thielking won both the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke.
Thielking also helped Denison to a win in the 200 medley relay while Culibrk did the same in the 200 freestyle relay as the Big Red swept both relay events.
In the first event, the 200 medley relay, Denison's "A" team of
Claire Moody, Thielking,
Phoebe Ferguson and
Grace Kadlecik placed first with a time of 1:46.99.
Then in the first individual event, the 1000 freestyle, Denison took three of the top-four spots as Brown won it with a time of 10:18.25 while
Tara Witkowski was second at 10:24.53 and
Lucy Hardart was fourth at 11:00.89.
Denison then swept each of the top-five spots in the 200 freestyle as Culibrk finished first with a time of 1:54.55, followed by
Taryn Wisner (1:54.64) in second, Ferguson (1:55.33) in third,
Annie Pfeufer (1:55.36) in fourth and
Esme Wright (1:55.53) in fifth.
Next up, Moody (59.27) finished in third place in the 100 backstroke before Thielking earned the win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.65.
The Big Red took three of the top-five times in both the 200 butterfly and the 50 freestyle. In the 200 butterfly,
Kelly Derasmo (2:07.99) was second,
Maria Mrosko (2:10.75) was third and
Nikki Barnas (2:12.77) was fifth while in the 50 freestyle,
Amber Croonquist (24.59) finished second before
Natalie English (24.71) and
Lauren Young (25.12) finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Culibrk then earned her second win of the day in the freestyle events with a time of 52.46 seconds in the 100 freestyle while Wright was third at 54.01 seconds.
Moody (2:017.13) and Wisner (2:07.80) finished back-to-back in second and third place, respectively, in the 200 backstroke, and then Thielking earned her second win of the day as she finished first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.91.
Brown followed that by earning her second win in the freestyle events with a time of 5:02.61 in the 500 freestyle while leading Derasmo (5:16.06) in second place, Pfeufer (5:16.43) in third and Barnas (5:16.85) in fourth.
Denison took each of the top-two positions and six of the top-seven spots in the 100 butterfly, led by Croonquist (56.73) in first and followed by Ferguson (57.27 seconds) in second,
Emma Pritchett (57.96) in fourth,
Maja Palmroos (58.70) in fifth,
Emma Berdelman (58.80) in sixth and
Kayla Tehrani (59.69) in seventh.
In the final individual event, the 400 IM, Witkowski (4:33.21) and Wright (4:35.05) finished second and third, respectively, before Denison's "A" team of Kadlecik, Culibrk, Croonquist and Ferguson took first place with a time of 1:36.59 to finish off the day in the 200 freestyle relay.
On the diving boards,
Kerstyn Johnson earned a provisional regional qualifying score of 274.80 to take first place in the 3-meter dive while
LuSi Minnich (254.50) and
Maggie Seftenberg (252.60) finished behind her in second and third place, respectively. Then on the 1-meter dive, both Johnson and Minnich earned provisional regional qualifying scores as Johnson (267.35) was second and Minnich (261.20) was third.
Denison returns to action on Saturday, January 21, when they travel to Ohio University to take on the Bobcats in a traditional dual meet starting at 1 p.m. in Athens, Ohio. The Big Red will then host Senior Day against North Coast Athletic Conference foe Ohio Wesleyan University and NCAA Division I Youngstown State University in a sprint meet starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 28.
