GAMBIER, Ohio (September 12, 2022) – The Denison University women's tennis team began its 2022-23 season this past weekend by competing at the nine-team Kenyon Invitational on Saturday, September 10, and Sunday, September 11, in Gambier, Ohio.

Saturday's matches included singles and doubles play, both inside and out, while Sunday's rainy weather forced play inside with doubles matches only.

Day one saw senior Sydney Cianciola, sophomore Elizabeth Hoo and freshmen Anna Leach and Kennedy Herring each go 2-0 in singles competition.

Cianciola bested Crystal Zhou of Carnegie Mellon University in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6), and defeated Katalina Wang of Case Western Reserve University 6-3, 6-1. Hoo took down Jaclyn Voss of John Carroll University 6-0, 6-1 and beat Rachelle Moses of Otterbein University 6-0, 6-3. Leach defeated Moses 6-4, 6-0 and then beat Cassady Shough, also of Otterbein, 6-2, 6-2, while Herring defeated Emily Duckett of John Carroll 6-3, 6-0 and bested Emma Boreman, also from John Carroll, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles action on Saturday, senior Monique Brual and sophomore Caroline Lopez defeated Morgan Dobos and Mia Zivkovic of John Carroll 6-2, the freshmen duo of Sofia Zafiropulos and Peyton Oda bested Elisa Syed and Caitlyn Hsu of Case Western Reserve 8-6, and Herring and Hoo took down Olivia Eckels and Moses of Otterbein 8-1.

Then during day two, four Big Red pairs went a perfect 2-0 on the inside courts. Cianciola and senior partner Sarah Robertson earned an 8-5 win over Carnegie Mellon's Bin Zheng and Sarah Yang followed by an 8-2 decision over Case Western Reserve's Asha Shukla and Katherine Wang. Brual and Lopez earned an 8-4 win over Carnegie Mellon's Simran Bedi and Malikaa Marathe followed by an 8-3 victory over Oberlin College's Dina Nouaime and Lydia Zafeiri.

The freshmen duo of Sophie Russell and Hannah Quick defeated a pair of Otterbein duos as they took down Eckels and Moses 8-4 and then came out on top 8-3 over Shough and Aubrey McMahon. Lastly, another Big Red freshmen duo, Alessandra Ceccarelli and Anna Leach, handled Otterbein's Shough and McMahon 8-1 and defeated John Carroll's Caroline Chandler and Felicity Kolb by a score of 8-3.

The Big Red will be back in action next Saturday, September 17, and Sunday, September 18, as they host the Big Red Invitational in Granville, Ohio.
