Women’s lacrosse earns at-large bid, set to host first two rounds of NCAA Tournament

GRANVILLE, Ohio (May 9, 2022) – The Denison University women's lacrosse team has received an at-large bid to the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The Big Red will host the first-round game between Catholic University and Saint Mary's College (IN) on Saturday, May 14, before taking on the winner in the second round on Sunday, May 15.

Earning one of only 14 at-large bids to this year's national tournament, the Big Red enter this year's NCAA Tournament 11-6 overall, and are receiving votes in the latest IL Women/IWLCA Division III Poll.

This will be Denison's 23rd overall and eighth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Last year, the Big Red won three games at the national tournament, starting with a 17-2 win over Saint Mary's in the second round, and advanced to the Final Four for the first time in program history. Denison defeated Aurora University 16-5 in the third round and won 10-7 over the University of Chicago in the semifinals before falling 20-10 against the eventual national champion, Salisbury University.

The Big Red are led offensively by senior Casey McTague, who has scored 62 goals this season while adding 66 draw controls, 37 groundballs and 25 caused turnovers. Sophomore Josie Lucchesi has scored 33 goals while fellow-junior Jane Bailey has 28 goals and leads the team with 22 assists. Defensively, junior Annie Rau has recorded 26 groundballs and 22 caused turnovers.

Catholic (13-4) has won 10 games in a row, went undefeated in conference play during the regular season at 6-0, and won the Landmark Conference Tournament Championship. As a result, the 17th-ranked Cardinals are making their 13th overall and eighth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. On March 6, Catholic defeated a familiar Denison opponent, Kenyon College, by a final score of 14-8. Other common opponents this year between the Big Red and the Cardinals include Washington & Lee University, which defeated Denison 10-5 (April 23) and beat Catholic 12-4 (March 12), and Franklin & Marshall College, which won 20-10 against Denison (March 16) and 15-6 against Catholic (March 23).

St. Mary's (11-6), meanwhile, won its second consecutive MIAA Tournament Championship, and will now make their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
