LAKE NONA, Fla. (May 27, 2022) – Day one of the 2022 NCAA Division III Individual Championships at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Florida, saw a great start for both
Tim Cianciola and
Jack Bulger.
Cianciola, the No. 4-ranked singles player in the ITA Central Region, matched up against Trinity University's (TX) Cameron Krimball, the No. 2-ranked player in the West Region and the No. 7-seeded player in the singles field, in the first round.
Cianciola rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Krimball to advance to the second round (Sweet 16), where he then squared off against Kalamazoo College's Ian Yi, the No. 9-ranked player in the Central Region, and won 3-1 (retired) to advance to the quarterfinals (Elite 8) on the morning of Friday, May 28.
Next up, Cianciola will take on Tufts University's Isaac Gorelik, the No. 4-ranked played in the Northeast Region, in the quarterfinals of the singles bracket at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 28. Gorelik upset Christian Alshon, the top-seeded player in the tournament and No. 2-ranked played in the Central Region from the University of Chicago, 6-7 (2-7), 7-5, 6-3, to reach the quarterfinals against Cianciola.
In the doubles competition, Cianciola and Bulger, the No. 1-ranked duo in the Central Region and the No. 4-seeded duo in the tournament, opened up against Nichols Aney and Alex Budde, the No. 4-ranked duo in the Central Region from Gustavus Adolphus College. Cianciola and Bulger came out on top in a three-set comeback by a final score of 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals (Elite 8) on Friday.
In the quarterfinals of the doubles competition, Cianciola and Bulger will return to the court at 3 p.m. on Friday to battle Moses Hutchison and Andrew Watson, the No. 1-ranked duo in the Atlantic South Region from the University of Mary Washington.
