CLEVELAND, Ohio (May 13, 2022) – The 2022 season for the Denison University women's tennis team came to a close on Friday in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament as 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University defeated the No. 24 Big Red, 5-1, from the Carlton Courts in Cleveland, Ohio.
Denison advanced to the second round after a 6-0 win on Thursday against the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. As the host of the opening three rounds, Case Western (17-4 overall) received a bye into the second round.
The Spartans took control in doubles as Rahda Patel and Katerine Wang defeated
Hannah Bradvica and
Kendall Schrader by a score of 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Then at No. 1 doubles,
Sydney Cianciola and
Sarah Robertson were tied 6-6 with Hannah Kassaie and Lily McClosky before it was the Spartans than earned the 8-6 win to go up 2-0.
Denison earned its lone win of the day at No. 2 doubles as
Monique Brual and
Caroline Lopez came out on top 8-6 against Nina Hoog and Pallavi Goculdas.
In singles play, Lopez was forced to retire in the No. 5 spot, leaving Case with just two wins away from clinching it.
The first singles matchup to be played out and finish was a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles for Patel over Brual.
The matched was then clinched at No. 6 singles as Madeleine Eiss defeated
Susan Biederstedt 6-2, 6-1.
Denison ended its 2022 season with a final record of 15-8 and won its first North Coast Athletic Conference Championship since 2016. Denison received All-NCAC recognition from
Sydney Cianciola,
Sarah Robertson,
Monique Brual and
Caroline Lopez while Head Coach
Jamie Scott was named the NCAC Coach of the Year for the first time in her five seasons leading the Big Red. Additionally, Cianciola and Robertson were selected as the first doubles alternate for the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Doubles Championship in Orlando, Florida, on May 27-29.
