CLEVELAND, Ohio (May 12, 2022) – The No. 24 nationally-ranked Denison University women's tennis team won its first-round matchup at the 2022 NCAA Division III Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio, as the Big Red blanked the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg by a final score of 6-0. This is Denison's 21st NCAA Tournament victory in program history as the Big Red have now won their first match in each of their last 11 NCAA Tournament appearances dating back to 2004.
Opening their dominant play on the doubles courts, the Big Red earned their first victory of the day in No. 1 doubles when
Sydney Cianciola and
Sarah Robertson posted an 8-0 win over Cathryn Rossi and Isabelle Lane.
The Big Red's second win of the day was another 8-0 win, this time in the second flight by
Monique Brual and
Kendall Schrader over Abigail Rosman and Emily Ruhlman.
Denison finished off the clean sweep of doubles with an 8-1 win in the No. 3 spot by
Hannah Bradvica and
Susan Biederstedt over Amber Sterrett and Kelsey Murphy.
Needing only two more wins entering singles play, the Big Red instead got three wins as Robertson (No. 2 singles) and Bradvica (No. 4 singles) both won 6-0, 6-0 while Biederstedt was victorious 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 5 position.
Playing in its 14th NCAA Tournament appearance and second in a row, Denison improved to 15-7 on the season while Pitt-Greensburg, which won its first conference tournament championship in program history and was participating in the NCAA Tournament for the first time as well, ended its season at 15-5.
Denison will return to the Carlton Courts in Cleveland, Ohio, on Friday, May 13, for the second round of the 2022 NCAA Division III Championship. The Big Red will face off against tournament-host and No. 12 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University at 4:30 p.m.
