No. 13 men’s tennis enjoys 3-0 Saturday

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 9, 2022) – After moving up one spot to No. 13 in the latest Division III Men's ITA Collegiate Tennis National Rankings on Friday, the Denison University men's tennis team swept three straight matches on Saturday to improve to 16-1 overall on the season. The Big Red started the day with a win over Capital University in the morning before coming back in the afternoon for another victory, this time over Asbury University (Ky.). Denison then wrapped up the evening with a win over Wabash College to improve to 3-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference West Division action.

No. 13 Denison 9, Capital 0
Doubles
  • Both the pairs of Andy Mackler and Colin Gramley (No. 2 doubles) and Archie Turner and Blake Eason (No. 3 doubles) did not drop a single game en route to 8-0 wins and a 2-0 lead for Denison. It was the first time playing together so far this season for Turner and Eason.
  • Tim Cianciola and Jack Bulger then finished off the doubles sweep to start their busy day with an 8-3 win in the No. 1 spot.
Singles
  • The three through six singles matches all went to Denison via shutout fashion.
  • Neither Eason (No. 3 singles) or Milan Gonela (No. 4 singles) dropped a single game as they clinched the match with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins.
  • Cianciola won 6-1, 6-2 in the top spot and Marc-Lennart Harms won 6-2, 6-0 in the two hole.
  • Playing in his first singles match of the year, Nadeem Jones did not drop a game in the five spot, giving the Big Red their third 6-0, 6-0 win of the match.
  • Additionally, Joseph Boyle won 5-0, retired in the No. 6 position.

Doubles
  • The Big Red swept the doubles matches in order as Cianciola and Bulger (No. 1 doubles) won 8-1, Harms and Eason (No. 2 doubles) won 8-4, and Mackler and Gramley (No. 3 doubles) were victorious by a score of 8-3.
Singles
  • Mackler won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 singles before the clinching point by a score of 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles by Harms.
  • Cianciola then won 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 singles before Bulger had to pull out a three-set victory, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, after dropping the first set at No. 2 singles.
  • Denison finished it off with wins of 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 singles by Daniel Garcia and 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles by Ryan Patrick.

Doubles
  • For the second time on the day, Denison got a pair of 8-0 wins at both No. 2 doubles (Harms and Eason) and No. 3 doubles (Mackler and Patrick).
  • Cianciola and Bulger, the number one ranked doubles pairing in the Central region, won 8-2 to improve to 14-0 together (all at No. 1 doubles) after the three wins on Saturday.
  • Additionally, Harms and Eason are now 8-1 when playing doubles together while for Mackler and Patrick, it was their first time playing together so far this season.
Singles
  • Then, if it was possible to be even more dominant than they were all day, the Big Red did so in their final round of singles matches as not a single Denison player lost more than one game in any match.
  • Bulger (No. 1 singles) and Gonela (No. 4 singles) both won 6-0, 6-1 while Harms (No. 2 singles) and Gramely (No. 5 singles) both won 6-1, 6-0. Gonela is now 7-0 on the season while Gramley is 5-0.
  • For the second time on the day, Eason won without dropping a game (6-0, 6-0) at No. 3 singles as he improved to 8-0 in singles matches so far this season.
  • Last but not least, Turner played in his first singles match of the season and won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
 
Records:
  • Now with 14 straight wins under its belt, Denison (16-1 overall, 3-0 NCAC West) still has not lost since a close 5-4 defeat against the current No. 1 nationally-ranked team in the country, Case Western Reserve University, way back on February 19.
  • In addition to winning its first ever matchup against Asbury (11-4) on Saturday, Denison is now 24-0 all-time against Capital (6-10) and is 26-1 all-time against Wabash (6-10, 0-2).
 
Next Up: Denison will wrap up NCAC West Division play on the road at DePauw University (10-6, 2-0) tomorrow, Sunday, April 10, at 1 p.m. seeking their fourth straight undefeated conference season. The Big Red have not lost a match in conference or divisional action since a 5-4 loss against DePauw during their final regular-season match of the 2017 season, a span of 14 consecutive wins.
