No. 14 men’s tennis beats another ranked team; pushes winning streak to eight

GRANVILLE, Ohio (March 26, 2022) – The No. 14 Denison University men's tennis team pushed its current winning streak to eight matches and improved to 10-1 overall on the season and 6-1 vs. nationally-ranked opponents with a pair of wins on Saturday. The Big Red first swept No. 17-ranked Carnegie Mellon University 9-0 in the afternoon before coming back in the evening to take down Ohio Northern University also by a score of 9-0.

Doubles Singles
  • Cianciola stated off singles play with a 6-0, 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot.
  • Ryan Patrick clinched the team victory with a win of 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
  • Harms won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Bulger won 7-5, 6-3 in the two spot.
  • Denison then finished off the sweep with wins of 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot by Mackler and 6-2, 6-2 in the six hole by Daniel Garcia.

Doubles
  • Patrick and Archie Turner rolled 8-1 at No. 3 doubles, as did Cianciola and Bulger by the same score of 8-1 at No. 1 doubles.
Singles
  • Cianciola won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
  • Milan Gonela did not drop a point on the path to victory at No. 4 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 to earn the clinching point.
  • Eason was victorious 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and Harms won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
  • Gramley earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, and Joseph Boyle came back to earn a three-set win 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) in the six spot. Tied 7-7 in the set, Boyle won three points in a row to secure his team's second sweep of the day.
 
Records:
  • Now at 10-1 overall, No. 14 Denison has now earned its best start to a season since 2011-12 when the Big Red started 11-1 and went on to finish 15-5.
  • Coming off a 9-0 loss against the No. 1 nationally-ranked team in the country, Case Western Reserve University, its last time out, No. 17 Carnegie Mellon fell to 5-6 with its loss to the Big Red. Denison had lost five matches in a row against CMU since 2011-12 before its win on Saturday, and now trails the all-time series against the Tartans by only one (7-6).
  • Ohio Northern, which began the day on a seven-match winning streak, fell to 13-4 and lost for just the third time on the road at 7-3. This was the first matchup between Denison and ONU since 2010-11, a 7-2 win for the Big Red at the time. Denison leads the all-time series between the two schools by an 8-0 margin. The teams have only met twice since 1992.
