GAMBIER, Ohio (November 5, 2022) – In a matchup between the top two teams in NCAA Division III, the No. 2-ranked Denison University women's swimming & diving team fell to No. 1 Kenyon College in the two team's annual dual meet on Saturday in Gambier, Ohio. In the end, the Owls earned a 183-117 win over the Big Red.
The meet began with the 200 medley relay, which saw Denison's top group of
Grace Kadlecik,
Drue Thielking,
Phoebe Ferguson and
Tara Culibrk finish second at 1:46.71.
Then in the first individual event of the meet, the 1000 freestyle,
Tara Witkowski captured first place with a time of 10:32.65.
Lucy Hardart followed in third place at 10:42.40.
Next was the 200 freestyle, which saw
Taryn Wisner (1:54.86), Culibrk (1:56.14) and
Annie Pfeufer (1:56.49) finish in order between second and fourth place before
Claire Moody took third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.84 seconds.
Denison again finished in second through fourth place in the 100 breaststroke as Thielking (1:04.38) was second with an NCAA National "B" cut time while
Esme Wright (1:07.70) was third and
Zoe Barclay (1:08.17) was fourth.
In the 200 butterfly,
Quinn Brown was second with a time of 2:07.34 before Kadlecik (24.62), Ferguson (24.64) and
Maja Palmroos (25.16) finished in order between third and fifth place in the 50 freestyle.
Culibrk finished in second place in the 100 freestyle for the second year in a row against Kenyon, doing so this year with a time of 53.18 seconds.
Denison's second win of the day then came from Moody with a time of 2:05.91 in the 200 backstroke.
Thielking (2:22.57), Wright (2:24.06) and
Savannah Sargent (2:24.80) finished in order between second and fourth place in the 200 breaststroke.
For the second year in a row, Wisner (5:04.99) won the 500 freestyle against Kenyon as she and Brown (5:05.33) finished in the top two spots, respectively, before Ferguson (57.23) and Palmroos (59.52) finished back-to-back in third and fourth place in the 100 butterfly.
In the final individual swim, the 400 IM, Wright took second place with a time of 4:30.55 before Kadlecik, Culibrk, Ferguson and Palmroos finished third in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:36.54.
On the diving boards,
Maggie Seftenberg (226.65),
Kerstyn Johnson (215.85),
Anya Ferner (213.22) and
LuSi Minnich (209.10) finished in order between second and fifth place in the one-meter dive. Then in the three-meter dive, Johnson (231.07) was second, Seftenberg (218.40) was third, Ferner (210.37) was fourth and Minnich (191.77) was fifth.
The Big Red will return to the pool on Friday, November 11, at Ohio State University.
