ST. LOUIS, Mo. (October 2, 2022) – The Denison University women's tennis team finished up its Fall 2022 schedule at the ITA Central Regional Championships held at Washington University in St. Louis this past weekend.

In the ITA singles bracket, senior Sydney Cianciola was seeded fifth and earned three-set wins over Margaret Bugnacki (Lake Forest) 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 and Katherine Johnston (WashU) 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 on day one to advance to the round of 16. However, Cianciola came up short on Saturday in the round of 16, falling 6-2, 6-1 to Natalie Bassett of North Central College.

Also in the main singles bracket, senior Sarah Robertson won her first match 6-2, 6-2 over Catriona Macintosh (Kenyon) before falling 6-2, 6-1 to Brooke Pedersen (Chicago) in the round of 32. Fellow-senior Monique Brual also won her first match, doing so in three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1, over Sullivan Patel (Hope) before falling in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, to Sophia Huynh (WashU) in the round of 32.

In the back draw of the main singles bracket, freshman Peyton Oda earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kimbeley Peterson (Principia) before taking down Julianna Johnson (Adrian) 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16. Unfortunately, in the quarterfinals, Oda came up short in a third set super tiebreaker, 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10), to Maria Herrera from Franciscan University.

In the Green draw, freshman Hannah Quick earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Emma Kealy (Saint Mary's) before falling in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5), against Sai Dhanvi Lalasa (Kenyon) in the quarterfinals. In the same bracket, sophomore Elizabeth Hoo won her first match 6-1, 6-3 over Emilee Bassett (Trine) before also falling in three sets in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8), to Nina Hoog (CWRU).

In the Red draw, freshman Sofia Zafiropulos won her first match over Felicity Kolb (John Carroll) 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) before being unable to play in the quarterfinals due to injury.

In the ITA doubles bracket, Cianciola and Robertson were seeded third and rolled to an 8-4 win over Renee Torres and Sophie Zhuang (Kalamazoo) to advance to the round of 16, where they then came up short by a score of 8-6 to Patel and Amanda Lopykinski (Hope).

Also in the main doubles bracket, Oda and Zafiropulos won 8-4 over Meghan Killmaster and Ivy Walker (Kalamazoo) in the first round before falling 8-2 to fourth-seeded Karen Gao and Eliana Hanna (WashU) in the round of 32 while Quick and Hoo won their first match 8-4 over Kina Ehlers and Claire Cardie (Franciscan) before dropping an 8-1 decision vs. Perene Wang and Claudia Ng (Chicago) in the round of 32.

In the back draw of doubles, Oda and Zafiropulos rebounded with an 8-2 win over Morgan Dobos and Mia Zivkovic (John Carroll) followed by an 8-3 victory over Jamie Hurst and Jenna Bell (Ohio Northern) to advance to the quarterfinals before having to withdraw from the competition.
