YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (January 29, 2022) – The No. 2 Denison University men's swimming & diving team posted a 180-113 victory over NCAA Division I Youngstown State University in what was also the Big Red's final tune-up prior to the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship on February 9-12.
The Big Red logged 10 event wins as
Richie Kurlich and
Trey Ike each took part in three of those wins while
Sam Myaard had two individual wins as well.
The meet started strong as
Liam Picozzi, Kurlich,
Ethan Bevill and Ike combined to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.15.
In the first individual race of the day, the 1000 freestyle, Myaard (9:39.47) was first and was followed by
Lucas Conrads (9:50.94) in second and
Tyler Distenfeld (9:56.39) in third.
Kyle Verstandig won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.51 and was followed by
Christian Narcelles in second place with a time of 1:44.52 and
Ryan Foreback in third at 1:47.33.
In the 100 backstroke, Picozzi (52.67 seconds) and
Shea Card (54.42 seconds) finished in second and third place, respectively.
Kurlich then got Denison back to its winning ways with a time of 57.49 seconds in the 100 breaststroke.
Gavin Jones followed Kurlich in second with a time of 59.16 seconds.
In the 200 butterfly,
Noah Houskeeper (1:55.05) was third, Bevill (1:56.41) was fourth,
Oakley Lorson (1:56.42) was fifth and
Eric Chimes (1:58.13) was sixth.
In the 50 freestyle, Ike finished first with a time of 20.88 seconds and was followed by
Chase Fisher in second at 21.19 seconds; and then in the 100 freestyle, Ike picked up his third win of the day with a time of 46.50 seconds while being followed by Verstandig in second with a time of 47.23 seconds and Fisher in third at 47.56 seconds.
In the 200 backstroke, Picozzi (1:57.19) finished second, Conrads (1:59.51) finished third and
Connor Brown (2:00.41) finished fourth.
In the 200 breaststroke, Kurlich matched Ike win three wins on the day as he finished with a time of 2:07.68 and was followed by Jones in second with a time of 2:09.07 and Narcelles in third at 2:11.37.
Myaard picked up his second win of the day with a time of 4:42.69 in the 500 freestyle; and then Kurlich was second in the 100 butterfly at 49.61 seconds.
On the 3-meter board,
Liam Simmons finished in first place with a score of 267.53; and then the 1-meter dive saw
Brendan Downey (259.05), Simmons (257.78) and
Kristian Kowalski (248.78) finish in first, second and third place, respectively.
Denison returns to action at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 9, with the first of four days at the 2022 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
