OBERLIN, Ohio (September 25, 2021) – Day one of the Oberlin College Invite featured all three rounds of doubles action between the Denison University men's tennis team, Oberlin College, Case Western Reserve University, Tiffin University, and John Carroll University.
In the first round of Flight A, Denison's No. 2 duo of
Andy Mackler/
Colin Gramley defeated Oberlin's top duo handedly by a score of 8-1. They finished in fourth place while Denison's top duo of
John Thompson/
Jack Bulger won their last two matches by scores of 8-2 over John Carroll's top duo and then 8-5 over Tiffin's No. 2 duo to claim sixth place.
In Flight B, Denison's No. 3 duo of
Blake Eason/
Marc-Lennart Harms advanced to the finals after an 8-0 win over Case Western's No. 4 pairing before falling 8-6 in the final against Case Western's No. 3 duo. Meanwhile, Denison's No. 4 duo of
Daniel Garcia/
Milan Gonela won their last two matches by scores of 8-4 over Tiffin's No. 3 pairing and then 8-0 over Tiffin's 4 pairing to claim sixth place.
Winning their first-round match in Flight C was Denison's No. 5 pairing of
Ryan Patrick/Jake Louiselle by a score of 8-1 over John Carroll's No. 2 duo, and Denison's No. 6 duo of
Alex Wootton/
Nadeem Jones by a score of 8-5 over Oberlin's No. 3 pairing . Patrick and Louiselle then won 8-1 again, this time over Case Western's No. 6 pairing to advance to the finals, where they fell 8-6 to Case Western's No. 5 pairing. Wootton and Jones, meanwhile, won their third-place match 8-5 over Case Western's No. 6 pairing.
Last but not least, in Flight D, Denison's
Joseph Boyle teamed up with John Carroll's Sean Padden (Denison No. 7 duo) to go 3-0 with wins of 8-2 over Tiffin's No. 5 duo, 8-6 over John Carroll's No. 3 duo, and 8-2 over Oberlin's No. 5 pairing.

David Schilling said after day one, "All in all, today was a pretty uneven performance from us, but we have a lot of freshmen right now getting some good experience and a lot of matches under their belt. We certainly got our work in today, which is the most important thing. We will benefit from this both in the short term and in the long term. Tomorrow will be a better judge of where we are at because it is all singles."
