NCAC Baseball Championship Series Preview

GRANVILLE, Ohio--  Denison and Wooster will meet in the 2021 NCAC Baseball Championship Series on May 20 at Noon with an if necessary game scheduled for May 21 at 1:30 p.m. All games will be played at Art Murray Field in Wooster, Ohio.

Spectator Info: Wooster's updated spectator policies for the championship series can be found here. Each participating student-athlete from both teams can have two (2) guests included on a pass list that will be managed by each institution. Denison pass list guests should park in the spaces along Gasche Street, walk along the outfield fence, and check in at the left field foul pole. Seating will be in the bleachers along the third base side. All spectators are always expected to wear masks while on the Wooster campus.

How to Watch: All games will be live streamed by the College of Wooster and live stats (Game 1, Game 2, Game 3) will also be available.

Home & Away Designation: A coin flip was conducted earlier this week to determine the home team for games one and two. Denison will be the home team in the opener while Wooster will be the home team for game two. If a deciding third game is needed, another coin flip will take place to determine that game's home team.

The Basics: Denison enters with a 21-10 record and advanced to the NCAC Championship Series by capturing the West Division crown with an 11-5 mark. The Big Red is ranked third in the Mideast regional rankings behind Adrian (27-7), and Washington and Jefferson (33-1). Wooster (24-11) is ranked seventh in the most recent regional rankings from May 12.

Long Layoff: Denison hasn't played a game since its May 8th doubleheader at Allegheny where DU took two from the Gators, 4-2 and 5-4.

Big Mac: Senior first baseman Brian McAuliffe has made the most of his senior campaign. He became Denison's career home run leader earlier this season and leads the squad with 11 home runs and a .438 batting average.  His .884 slugging percentage ranks 13th in Division III. He needs one home run to tie the single-season record (12) set by Brian Regan in 2003.

This Team Can Mash: Denison boasts one of the most potent offenses in Division III led by McAuliffe, Will Krushena and Max Lahn. The trio has years of starting experience under their belts and rank 1-3 in nearly every offensive category in 2021. Krushena is batting .377 with 11 doubles and seven home runs after making a position change from first base to left field. In his second season as a full-time starter at shortstop, Lahn is batting .351 with eight doubles and 22 RBI.

The Arms: Denison's rotation is led by senior Taylor Perrett and sophomore Charlie Flemming. Perrett is 4-2 with a 4.22 ERA in eight starts. Fleming is 6-1 with a 4.10 ERA in 52.2 IP. Fleming is striking out one batter an inning. Will McManaman has been DU's third starter through much of the season. He is 2-2 with a 4.64 ERA in 33.0 IP.

Looking Back: Denison and Wooster played a pair of home-and-home doubleheaders in late March. Each team took two games on one another's home field. Max Lahn batted .467 with two home runs and one double in the series. Krushena also blasted two home runs while Dylan Hunter batted .500 with a team-high seven RBI.  It was a high scoring four-game series with the two teams combining for 72 runs on the weekend.

Feels Like the First Time?: Should the Big Red win the NCAC Championship Series it would mark the first NCAC Championship in program history. Denison captured its first NCAC Tournament Championship in 2019 by defeating the Scots in back-to-back elimination games in Chillicothe, Ohio.

The Coaches: Denison is led by Mike Deegan in his ninth season at the helm. He is the program's all-time leader in wins at 218-116 (.653). Across the dugout, Barry Craddock is in his second season leading the Fighting Scots. He is 28-15 since taking over for longtime head coach Tim Pettorini prior to the 2020 season.  Craddock was the head coach at Denison from 2000-07.
