LANSING, Mich. – Denison women's golf improved upon their first-round score by 17 strokes on Wednesday afternoon as the Big Red carded a team score of 320 (+32) during the second round of the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship at the Forest Akers Golf Course (West Course) in Lansing, Michigan. Thanks to an overall two-day score of 657, the Big Red are currently in 12
th place, sitting six strokes ahead of the University of Texas at Dallas (663) in 13
th place and only one stroke behind 11
th place York College (Pa.) with 656 strokes. Carnegie Mellon is still leading the way following a two-day score of 620.
Following a first-round score of 90 on Tuesday afternoon, sophomore
Laine Hursh led the Big Red attack on Wednesday with a three-over-par second-round score of 75. After hitting for birdie on the par-5 eighth hole, Hursh hit for par in each of the next six holes before she landed her second birdie of the day on hole 15. The sophomore closed out her round with pars on 16 and 18 to total a 36-hole score of 165 and sit in a tie for 52
nd place.
One day after leading DU with an 82 in the first round, senior
Megan Wong improved her second round by two strokes to finish the day with an 80 (+8). Wong hit for par on eight of her 18 holes on Wednesday, while also connecting on back-to-back birdies on holes 14 and 15, giving her a two-day score of 162 as she sits in a tie for 33
rd place entering the third round.
Continuing Denison's improvements in the second round was sophomore
Julia Shafir who carded a two-stroke birdie on the ninth hole and ended her day with an 82 (+10), six strokes better than her day-one score. After 36 holes of play, Shafir enters day three with an overall score of 170 in a tie for 72
nd place.
Sophia Alexander followed Shafir by one stroke on Wednesday and matched her first-round score with her second 83 (+11) of the tournament. Alexander carded a consistent 11 pars during the second round, putting her in a tie for 59
th place with a score of 166.
Junior
Megan Munn closed out the Big Red's second round with a birdie on hole 14 and back-to-back pars to finish the round and end the day with an 88 (+16). Munn enters Thursday's third round with a score of 172, good for a two-way tie for 85
th place.
Denison will return to Forest Akers G.C. on Thursday, May 13 for the third round of the NCAA Division III Championship. The top 15 teams remaining after Thursday's third round will advance to the final round of competition on Friday, May 14.
