LANSING, Mich. – Denison women's golf began their chase at a national title on Tuesday afternoon as the Big Red opened the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship at the Forest Akers Golf Course (West Course) in Lansing, Michigan. Opening the tournament with a first-round score of 337, the Big Red are currently tied for 13
th overall with York College (Pa.), while only being one stroke behind St. Mary's College (Ind.) and Grinnell College (336) in a tie for 11
th. Carnegie Mellon University currently leads after the first day of play with a team score of 312 (+24).
The Big Red are currently led by senior
Megan Wong who birdied the second hole of the day and hit for par on nine others to card an 82 (+10) during the first round. She currently sits in a tie for 34
th place with eight other players entering the second round.
Junior
Sophia Alexander follows Wong by one stroke after she posted a first-round score of 83 (+11) and is currently tied for 43
rd overall. Alexander highlighted her opening round with five pars on the front nine, as well as hitting for par on five holes on the back nine. The one-stroke trend continued for the Big Red as junior
Megan Munn trailed DU's top-two in a tie for 53
rd place with an opening round score of 84 (+12). Munn closed out her back nine on Tuesday with six pars, including three in the final four holes.
Sophomore
Julia Shafir book ended her back nine holes with a pair of pars while hitting for birdie on the 14
th hole to end her first round in a tie for 89
th place with an 88 (+16). Fellow sophomore
Laine Hursh rounded out Denison's performers hitting for par on four of her first 18 holes to card a first-round score of 90 (+18).
The Big Red will return to Forest Akers G.C. on Wednesday, May 12 for the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship. Second-round tee times will begin at 8 a.m.
