Denison men's golf captures NCAC title

MANSFIELD, Ohio—Denison men's golf won the 2021 North Coast Athletic Conference Championship by 34 shots after firing a team score of 303 in the final round at Westbrook Country Club.  Denison won the 36-hole event with a score of 582. Wittenberg placed second at 616 followed by DePauw (635), Wabash (637), Allegheny (643), Wooster (643), Ohio Wesleyan (646), Kenyon (647), and Hiram (731).

This is the first NCAC championship for Denison men's golf and the first conference title for the program since winning the Ohio Athletic Conference championship in 1968.

In the final round, Ben Scherman led Denison with a one-over-par round of 73.  He finished in a tie for first place overall with teammate Will Grady who carded a second round 76.  The two played one playoff hole to determine medalist honors and Scherman came out on top.
An excellent representation of Denison's domination comes right at the top of the standings.  Denison's five golfers placed first, second, third, fourth and t-fifth, overall. Jesse Felker followed Scherman and Grady with a 75 to finish third on the leaderboard. Grady chipped in for birdie on the 18th hole, which was his ninth hole of the day, and finished with four birdies in the round.

Felker was outstanding on the back nine firing a -3, 33 thanks to four birdies and two chip-in's.  Sam Davis was fourth overall after posting a 79 while Marc Mitchell checked in with a tie for fifth after a 79.
In the post-championship awards ceremony Ben Scherman won the Bob Nye Award as the tournament medalist and Felker was presented the NCAC Newcomer of the Year award.  Head coach Lauren Grogan was named the NCAC Coach of the Year for the first time in her career.

With the win, Denison receives the NCAC's automatic qualifier to the 2021 NCAA Division III Championship on May 11-14 at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia.  This is Denison's sixth NCAA Division III Championship team appearance and the program's first NCAA berth since placing 14th in 2004.  The entire field for this year's Division III Championship will be announced on May 3.
