MANSFIELD, Ohio—Denison women's golf captured its first North Coast Athletic Conference championship in program history completing the two-weekend 36-hole event with a 17 shot win on Saturday at Westbrook Country Club.
After posting an opening round score of 308 at Denison Golf Club last week, they returned with a second round score of 350 to finish at 658. DePauw was second at 675 followed by Wittenberg (721), Wooster (742), Allegheny (760), and Ohio Wesleyan (784).
In a second round that was played in windy conditions,
Laine Hursh led Denison in the second round with an 83.
Julia Shafir and
Megan Munn followed with 88 and
Sophia Alexander's 91 closed out Denison's top four scores.
Hursh took home overall medalist honors and was named the NCAC Newcomer of the Year in the post championship awards ceremony.
Megan Wong, who finished in fifth overall after rounds of 74 and 94 was named the NCAC Player of the Year.
Sophia Alexander checked in second overall after her rounds of 74 and 91.
Lauren Grogan was presented with the NCAC Coach of the Year, making it a clean sweep for the Big Red in this year's NCAC awards.
With the win, Denison receives the NCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship that will take place on May 11-14 at Forest Akers Golf Course in Lansing, Michigan. This is the first-ever appearance for Denison women's golf at the NCAA Championship. The entire field for this year's NCAA Championship will be announced on May 3.
