Game Recap: Baseball |

Denison and Wittenberg split baseball twinbill

Denison and Wittenberg split a doubleheader from Carlton-Davidson Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers rallied for an 8-7 win in the opener while Denison struck back with a 12-2 victory in game two.

Game 1
  • Denison battled back with three runs in the sixth and two in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead but the Tigers struck back with three in the bottom of the seventh on two costly errors that resulted in an 8-7 victory for Wittenberg.
  • Denison hit three solo home runs in the opening game but none were bigger than Brian McAuliffe's blast to right field in the top of the seventh that gave Denison a 6-5 lead.  Ty Robinson followed with a double that scored Will Krushena to send DU into the final half inning with a two-run advantage.
  • Denison reliever Caleb Struewing, who was on for Taylor Perrett retired Jack Hollinshead for the first out but Jack Seifert followed with a single up the middle.  A fielding error by the Big Red extended the inning and brought the go-ahead run to the plate in Ryan Probst.  He drew a walk and Mason Davis ended the game with a double down the right field line that cleared the bases.
  • Krushena was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.  Max Lahn and Dylan Hunter provided the other two home runs for Denison.  Perrett went six innings, allowing five earned runs and two walks while striking out three.  Struewing was charged with the loss.

Game 2
  • Denison rebounded with an emphatic 12-2 win in game two of the doubleheader. Will Krushena started things off with an opposite field two-run homer in the top of the first. That sparked a five-run first inning giving starting pitcher Charlie Fleming a nice cushion.
  • Denison blasted four home runs in the contest and seven homers on the day.  Krushena added two more home runs while Dylan Hunter and Brian McAuliffe went deep in the fifth inning.
  • Brian McAulliffe's two home runs on the day gives him 28 in his career and 11 this season, one shy of Brian Regan for the single-season home run record.
  • Fleming went the distance for Denison, allowing one earned run and seven hits while striking out eight in seven innings pitched. With the win, Fleming improved to 5-1 on the season.
  • DU pounded out 13 hits in the nightcap and six players in the lineup enjoyed multi-hit games (Anthony Ruggieri, Danny Alvarez, Ty Robinson, Krushena, McAuliffe, and Hunter).
Denison moves to 18-9 while Wittenberg's record shifts to 19-8. The two teams will meet in Granville on Sunday, May 2 with a doubleheader slated to begin at 1 p.m.
