Game Recap: Baseball |

Denison punches ticket to NCAC Championship Series

Denison Baseball split the weekend four-game series with Wittenberg, taking today's opening game 10-8 before falling 1-0 in game two.  With the victory in game one Denison clinched first place in North Coast Athletic Conference West Division to punch their ticket to the NCAC Championship Series against the College of Wooster.

Game 1
  • Some clutch hitting in a pressure-packed sixth-inning led Denison the come-from-behind win in game one.
  • Trailing 8-6 in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and two outs, Max Lahn drew a walk to get DU to within one.  Will Krushena delivered the knock out blow with a 3-run double to left-center to give Denison a 10-8 lead.
  • Wittenberg brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the seventh but DU reliever Jack Arnstein got Gage Carpenter to foul out and he struck out Connor O'Malley looking to end the game and clinch the spot in the NCAC Championship.
  • Lahn and Krushena led Denison with four RBI apiece. Dylan Hunter scored three runs while Brian McAuliffe was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks.
  • With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning, the Big Red bats went off for four runs on two hits, including a bases-clearing double from senior Max Lahn to put Denison in front, 6-2.
  • Arnstein (3-1) got the win, pitching the final 3.2 innings in relief. He allowed one earned run while scattering four hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Game 2
  • The nightcap was a stellar pitchers duel between Wittenberg's Joe Horoszko and Denison's Will McManaman.  Horoszko pitched the complete game shutout, allowing just five hits while striking out three.
  • Wittenberg's lone run came in the top of the seventh on an RBI double to left field by Chase Whisner that scored Connor Goss.
  • McManaman pitched 6.1 innings, scattering 11 hits while allowing one earned run. Caleb Struewing recorded the final two outs in the seventh.
  • Denison threatened in the bottom of the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one out but Horoszko induced fly ball outs to right and left field to end the game.
Denison will continue its regular season next weekend when they play Allegheny in a four-game series beginning with a doubleheader in Meadville, Pennsylvania on May 8, followed by a twin bill in Granville on Sunday, May 9.  The NCAC Championship Series will take place at the College of Wooster the weekend of May 21-23. Exact dates and times are still to be determined.
