#24 Denison knocks off #5 CMU in season finale

GAMBIER, Ohio -- No. 24 Denison women's tennis closed out their regular season on Saturday afternoon with a 7-2 upset victory over the fifth-ranked Tartans of Carnegie Mellon University at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville. This marks Denison's first win over CMU since March 6, 2011 when the Big Red defeated the Tartans, 5-4, to place third overall at the 2011 ITA Indoor Championships.

The Big Red opened strong in doubles play led by the duo of Devin Gramley and Monique Brual in No. 3 doubles who defeated Alex Iordache and Ora Wojciak, 8-2. The 19th-ranked pair of Alex Cash and Hannah Cianciola took down Lindy Cornwall and Megan Qiang, 8-6, in the top-flight. Closing out doubles was Sarah Robertson and Sydney Cianciola, who picked up an 8-2 win over Bin Zheng and Farida Abdelmoneum.
In singles play, Robertson defeated Wojciak 6-2, 6-1. CMU picked up their first win of the match when Qiang took down Gramley, 6-3, 6-1. Cornwall's 6-3, 6-4 win over Sydney Cianciola gave CMU their second and final win of the match.
Denison closed out the match with three straight wins, starting with Hannah Cianciola, who defeated Abdelmoneum in three sets, 0-6, 6-3, 6-1. Brual took down Iordache, 7-5, 6-4. Cash defeated Zheng, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. The upset sent Denison to 7-3 on the season and Carnegie Mellon earned their first loss of the season and moved to 11-1.

The Big Red ended the regular season with a 7-3 overall record and 4-2 record in NCAC play.
