Women's Golf jumps out to big lead after NCAC first round

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Denison women's golf fired a season-low 308 in the first round of the North Coast Atlantic Conference Championship, hosted at Denison Golf Club. The Big Red holds a 16 shot lead over second-place DePauw heading into next weekend's final round. leading DePauw (324) by 16 strokes. Wittenberg (356), Wooster (360), and Allegheny (362) are in a tight race for third place.

Senior Megan Wong and Junior Sophia Alexander both shot matching season-low 74s, which are tied for the tournament lead by five strokes. Alexander battled back on the back nine after shooting +2 on the front. She closed with two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine to shoot an even-par 37. Alexander also carded two birdies on the front nine. Wong had 11 pars and three birdies in her round, also shooting an even-par 37 on the back nine.
Sophomore Julia Shafir tied her career-low and her season best with a round of +7, 79, which finds her in solo third place after the first round. Shafir recorded 10 pars on the day, including a very good two-putt from off the back of the green on hole No. 16.
Laine Hursh and Megan Munn rounded out the starting five with rounds of 81 and 84, which landed them in 6th and 11th place, respectively. Hursh's lone birdie came early on the third hole, while Munn made birdies on No. 13 and the par-5 15th hole.
Denison's team score of 308 was the third-lowest 18-hole team score in program history and the best score posted by the team this season.

Women's golf looks to continue the momentum during practice this week while preparing for the second round of the conference championship which will be held at Westbrook Country Club in Mansfield, Ohio next Saturday, May 1.
