McAuliffe leads DU to a split at Case

Denison and Case Western Reserve split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland. The Spartans took game one, 6-3 but Denison battled back for a 7-4 victory in game two.

Game 1
  • Denison led 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth after an RBI single by Daniel Spencer in the third and a sacrifice fly by Patrick Neenan in the fourth that scored Dylan Hunter.
  • Case took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth but Denison's Ty Robinson tied the game with an RBI single in the top of the sixth.
  • The Spartans pulled ahead for good with a three-run seventh. Jake Ryan's 2-run homer off of Denison reliever Caleb Struewing was the turning point.
  • Robinson and Brian McAuliffe were 2-for-4 to lead Denison at the plate. Taylor Perrett (3-1) took the loss allowing seven hits and five earned runs in 6.1 IP.
 
Game 2
  • Brian McAuliffe blasted a pair of 3-run home runs to lead the Big Red to a 7-4 win over CWRU in the nightcap.  McAuliffe's home runs were No. 20 and No. 21 in his career, moving him into a four-way tie for first place on Denison's career list.
  • McAuliffe joins Lee Fischer '06, Alex Nikolich '04 and Brian Regan '04 who all departed DU with 21 homers.
  • In game two, McAuliffe was 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs and six RBI.
  • Charlie Fleming went eight innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs while improving to 4-0 this season.  Jack Arnstein picked up his second save by working a perfect ninth.
  • Patrick Neenan was 2-for-3 with a walk in his second career start at third base.
Denison and Case will square off in another doubleheader on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. in Granville. The Denison Sports Network broadcast will begin at 12:45 p.m.
