GRANVILLE, Ohio – Senior
Brian McAuliffe became Denison's all-time leader in home runs as Denison baseball split Sunday's doubleheader with Case Western Reserve at Big Red Field in Granville. McAuliffe powered the Big Red to a 15-4 win in game two after Denison dropped an 8-2 loss in the first game of the day.
- One day after tying Denison's career home run record with 21 in a 7-4 win at Case Western Reserve on Saturday, McAuliffe broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth in game two on Sunday when he blasted a three-run home run over the right centerfield wall to become the program's all-time home runs leader with 22, giving the Big Red an 8-3 lead. McAuliffe surpassed Lee Fischer '06, Alex Nikolich '04, and Brian Regan '04 who are now tied for second all-time with 21 home runs.
- Leading 10-3 in the bottom of the fifth, the Big Red added to their lead with five more runs on three hits, including a pair of RBI singles from Max Lahn and Justin Wernoski, putting Denison in front, 15-3.
- The win in game two sent Denison to 14-6 overall while Case Western Reserve dropped to 14-8.
- McAuliffe finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Lahn posted a 2-for-4 effort with three runs and two RBIs, while Ty Robinson added three hits and three runs scored.
- Junior Henry Haack earned the win in his first career start for the Big Red, collecting six strikeouts and two earned runs over five innings of work.
- In game one, starters Reece Marley and Will McManaman combined to allow four hits and posted four strikeouts through the first four innings as both sides remained scoreless entering the fifth inning. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Danny Alvarez tied the game at 1-1 when he sent a sacrifice fly out to left, scoring Daniel Spencer from third.
- Over the next four innings of play, CWRU tallied seven runs on eight hits as the Big Red were unable to recover and the Spartans earned their 14th win of the season.
- Freshman Jake Welsch led the Big Red with a 3-for-4 showing and a run batted in. Will Krushena added two hits and a run scored.
Denison will return to action on Thursday, April 22 when they travel to Greencastle, Ind. for an NCAC doubleheader with the DePauw Tigers beginning at 12 p.m. Game two will follow at approximately 2:30 p.m.
