GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Denison baseball opened a six-game series with DePauw University on Thursday afternoon and suffered a pair of losses to the Tigers at Walker Field in Greencastle, Ind. The Big Red fell 5-2 in game one before dropping game two, 12-4.
Game 1
- DePauw jumped out to an early advantage in the bottom of the second when Jack Fitzgerald grounded out to score TJ Carney-DeBord and Danny Sheehan scored on an error to put the Big Red in a 2-0 deficit.
- Denison bounced back in the top of the fourth when Brian McAuliffe scored on a sacrifice fly from Ty Robinson and Danny Alvarez connected on an RBI single to left, tying the game at 2-2.
- After Denison's Taylor Perrett and DePauw's Joe Runnells went three up, three down from the mound in the fifth, the Tigers broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth when Charlie Patrick connected on a two-run home run to help lead DePauw to their 11th win of the season.
- Perrett pitched a complete six innings for Denison, tallying four earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Alvarez and Will Krushena each recorded a hit for the Big Red.
Game 2
- The Tigers kept their momentum in game two when they combined for five runs through the first two innings, putting the Big Red behind 5-0 entering the third.
- Trailing 5-0 in the top of the fourth, Denison scored their first runs of the game when McAuliffe extended his all-time program lead in home runs with a two-run shot to cut into DePauw's lead, 5-2.
- Following a four-run output by the Tigers in the fifth, Krushena and McAuliffe returned to the long ball in the top of the sixth to make it a 9-4 game as the Big Red continued to trim away at DePauw's lead.
- The Tigers pulled away with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth and closed out the game in the seventh as DePauw moved to 12-14 overall and 5-5 in NCAC play. The Big Red dropped to 14-8 on the season and 7-3 in the conference.
- McAuliffe led the Big Red with a 3-for-3 effort, including two home runs. McAuliffe's career home run count currently sits at 24, the program's current record. Krushena also added a home run and finished the game, 1-for-3.
Denison and DePauw will continue their six-game series this Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25, when the Big Red host the Tigers in a pair of doubleheaders beginning at 12 p.m. on both days. The Denison Sports Network will provide a
