#12 Kenyon tops #24 Denison in Gambier

GAMBIER, Ohio -- No. 24 Denison women's tennis dropped an 8-1 decision on Wednesday to No. 12 Kenyon College at the VandenBerg Courts in Gambier.

In doubles play, the Ladies jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after Ilana Blackwood and Victoria Vasquez took down Sydney Cianciola and Sarah Robertson, 8-3 in No. 2 singles. The seventh-ranked duo of Daria Beshentseva and Erika Oku defeated the Big Red's 19th-ranked pair of Alex Cash and Hannah Cianciola in the top-flight decided by a tiebreak, 8-7 (7-5).
The Big Red picked up their lone win of the match when Devin Gramley and Monique Brual defeated Kayla Pukys and Erika Pontillo, 8-7 (7-5).
In singles action, Oku, ranked 23rd nationally, took down Sydney Cianciola in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Beshentseva, ranked 48th nationally, defeated Cash, 6-1, 6-3. Continuing the Ladies' dominant play was Pukys, who defeated Hannah Cianciola, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Blackwood took down Brual, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1. Eleni Dakos defeated Gramley, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). Robertson caused trouble for Vasquez, but DU's efforts came just short in two sets with two tiebreaks, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1). The loss sent Denison to 3-3 on the season and 2-2 in conference play as Kenyon moved to 2-0 on the season.

Denison will return to action on Saturday, April 17 when they face Allegheny College in a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m. in Granville.
