GRANVILLE, Ohio – 27
th-ranked Denison men's tennis continued their impressive 2021 campaign on Sunday afternoon, knocking off No. 14 Kenyon College, 8-1, at the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville. This marks Denison's first win over Kenyon since April 30, 2006 when the Big Red (18-4) defeated the Lords (17-5), 4-1, to earn their 12
th North Coast Athletic Conference Championship in the history of the program. The win also sends Denison's winning streak to five in 2021, a streak that began on March 27 in a 9-0 win over DePauw.
- Opening with a trio of victories on the doubles courts, Denison took an early lead in No. 3 doubles when Jacob Dennen and Akshat Agarwal defeated Jacob Smith and Evan Dean, 8-5, before Tim Cianciola and Jack Bulger gave DU a 2-0 lead in top-flight doubles with an 8-6 win over Luis Andres Platas and Thomas Kallarakal. Vlad Rotnov and Patrick McGuigan closed out the doubles sweep for the Big Red on the No. 2 court with an 8-6 win over Angelo Vidal and Jack Wagner.
- In singles play, Cianciola earned a quick 6-1, 6-0 victory over Platas in the top flight and Bulger followed in No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Kallarakal. In No. 4 singles, Marc-Lennart Harms took down Vidal, 6-2, 6-4, in straight sets, and Andy Mackler earned Denison's seventh win of the day on the No. 5 court with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Smith. Freshman Milan Gonela closed out Denison's victory in No. 6 singles, when he defeated Dean 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 in three sets. The win moves the Big Red to 6-1 overall and 3-0 and conference play while the Lords drop their first match of the year and sit at 0-1 in NCAC play.
- Back in 2006, the Big Red captured their 12th NCAC title after earning a pair of wins in doubles play when Randy Lofgren and Kevin Newman took down Sean Stewart and Greg Sussman in the top flight, 9-8, 9-7. James Davis and Jason Arenstein also defeated Robert Alef and Justin Greenlee, 8-4. Lofgren and Newman also earned wins in singles play, along with DU's No. 1 singles player Jordan Buehler, who took down Stewart, 6-4, 6-1. The win also marked Denison's first conference title since 2001.
The Big Red will return to action on Saturday, April 17 when they host Allegheny College for a doubleheader set to begin at 10 a.m. at the Denison Tennis Courts in Granville. The second match will start at approximately 2:30 p.m.
