GRANVILLE, Ohio (October 30, 2021) – The No. 1 nationally-ranked Denison University men's swimming team posted nine event victories, and that was enough to propel the Big Red to a 158-103 victory over NCAA Division I Xavier University during the Big Red's first home meet of the season at the Trumbull Aquatics Center. Denison has now defeated Xavier six times in a row.
Richie Kurlich led Denison with three event wins on Saturday (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, 200 medley relay) while
Chris Luus,
Ethan Bevill and
Sam Myaard each won two events.
The 2021-22 home opener for the Big Red was kicked off by Luus, Kurlich, Bevill and
Trey Ike winning first place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.32.
In the first individual event of the day, the 1000 freestyle, Denison took each of the top-three spots as Myaard was first with a time of 9:41.35,
Tyler Distenfeld was second with a time of 9:52.64, and
Christian McIntire was third with a time of 10:17.53.
Next was the 200 freestyle, where
Kyle Verstandig was second with a time of 1:43.75.
In the 100 backstroke, Luus picked up his second event win of the day with a time of 50.74 seconds, and then Kurlich earned his second win of the day with a time of 57.20 seconds in the 100 breaststroke.
In the 200 butterfly, Denison again went 1-2-3 as
Noah Houskeeper was first with a time of 1:53.66,
Eric Chimes was second with a time of 1:54.71, and Bevill was third with a time of 1:55.00.
In the 50 freestyle, Ike (21.18 seconds) was second,
Liam Picozzi (21.69 seconds) was third and
Aidan Lane (21.82 seconds) was fourth, and in the 100 freestyle, Verstandig (46.93 seconds) was second while Ike (47.17 seconds) was third.
In the 200 backstroke, Picozzi was second with a time of 1:55.77.
Kurlich earned win number three for him on the day with an NCAA Division III National "B" cut time of 2:04.25 in the 200 breaststroke.
In the 500 freestyle, Denison took each of the top three spots for the third time on the day as Myaard earned his second win with a time of 4:44.17, followed by
Ryan Foreback in second with a time of 4:46.11 and McIntire in third with a time of 4:46.29.
Bevill (50.52 seconds) won the 100 butterfly while Houskeeper (50.56 seconds) was second, and then
Patrick Daly won the final individual event of the day, the 200 IM, with a time of 1:54.63.
The 200 free relay then ended the day as Picozzi, Ike, Kurlich and Verstandig were second with a time of 1:23.64. Luus,
Nicholas Czepukaitis, Houskeeper and Chimes were third with a time of 1:25.29.
Dhinal Weerasinghe,
Christian Narcelles, Myaard and
Lucas Conrads were fourth with a time of 1:27.50.
There were no diving events held during this dual meet.
Denison returns to action next weekend on Saturday, November 6, when they host No. 2 nationally-ranked Kenyon College at 10 a.m. The meet will be streamed live by the Denison Sports Network beginning at 9:45 a.m.
