AKRON, Ohio (October 15, 2021) – The Denison University men's swimming team sits in first place out of three teams through the first of three sessions at the Zips Classic, hosted by the University of Akron at the Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium. The Big Red totaled 367 points on Friday night, and are ahead of Youngstown State University with 296 points and Xavier University with 219 points.
Session 1 - Friday, Oct. 15 - 5 p.m.
Denison took first place in all of five of the events it competed in on Friday.
The new 2021-22 season was kicked off by senior
Liam Picozzi, freshman
Patrick Daly, senior
Ethan Bevill and junior
Trey Ike winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:23.21. In second place was Youngstown State with a time of 3:23.54.
In the 500 freestyle, sophomore
Sam Myaard took first place with a time of 4:34.01, ahead of the second-place finisher from Youngstown State with a time of 4:34.25.
Next was the 200 IM, where Daly earned first place with a time of 1:52.22, ahead of the second-place finisher from Xavier with a time of 1:53.84.
In the 50 freestyle, Picozzi finished first with a time of 20.90 seconds while fellow-senior
Kyle Verstandig was second at 20.92 seconds.
The 800 free relay ended the night as Daly, Myaard, freshman
Gavin Jones and Verstandig won with a time of 6:50.07. In second place was Xavier with a time of 6:52.99.
The Akron Zips Classic will be closed out on Saturday, October 16, with two sessions beginning at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
