Denison bids adieu to seniors in 8-1 win over Muskingum

GRANVILLE, Ohio--  Denison sent its senior class out in style with a snowy 8-1 victory over Muskingum that was called after five innings due to less than ideal weather conditions.  With the win, Denison suspends its 2020 season with a record of 5-4.

Senior pitcher Max Dehon got the start on the mound for the Big Red and pitched two innings, allowing one run on three hits.  The Big Red broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second.  Vince Walker's single through the left side of the infield scored Steven Verstandig, who reached on a base hit earlier in the inning.  Will Krushena lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Sean Correa and Brian McAuliffe delivered a double off the wall in right field, scoring Walker and Ty Robinson.  The fifth run of the inning was driven in by Max Lahn on a base hit to center, scoring McAuliffe.

Trey Holland entered in the third inning and was dominant.  The junior left-hander struck out the side in all three innings pitched.  He faced 11 batters and struck out nine of them in three innings of scoreless work. 

In the fifth, Denison added three more runs thanks to a single by Brad Baldinger that scored Lahn, a ground out by Correa and then a run was scored by Peyton Burch on a wild pitch.

Dehon earned his first career win while Holland picked up his first save of the season.  In 13.0 innings pitched, Holland struck out 22 batters for an astronomical 15.23 strikeouts per nine innings in 2020.

Krushena was 2-for-2 with a walk and one RBI.  Denison's remaining five hits were recorded by Walker, McAuliffe, Lahn, Baldinger, and Verstandig.

Prior to the start of the game seniors from Muskingum and Denison were honored.  Denison's senior class is comprised of Brad Baldinger, Max Dehon, Will Krushena, Brian McAuliffe, Steven Verstandig, Vince Walker, and the late Sean Bonner.  The class leaves with 105 career wins, one North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament championship and two NCAA regional tournament berths.
