Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio—Denison earned a 67-62 conference win over visiting Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon at Livingston Gym. With the win, the Big Red moves to 5-9 in conference play while extending their home winning streak to four games.
The Big Red led by 10 early in the second half but Oberlin responded, taking a 49-47 lead with 8:21 to play. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Matt Gerics and Jack Coulter put Denison back on top by three with 5:55 to play.
The play of the game came one possession later. After a miss inside by Freeman Brou, Will Hunter secured the offensive rebound, scored on the put-back and was fouled in the act. His three-point play gave DU a 58-53 lead with 5:09 remaining.
Oberlin's Christian Fioretti kept his team in the game with a 3-pointer but Gerics followed with a dagger from beyond the arc on the Big Red's next trip down the floor. Oberlin closed the gap once again, getting to within two points with 1:44 remaining but this time it was Coulter who dialed it up from long range with 1:16 to play.
Oberlin had one last chance to tie the game after Charles Tiedemann's rebound off a miss by Coulter. With 14 seconds left, Fioritti's potential game-tying 3-pointer was on target but drew the front of the rim and Conor Fenton was there to snag the rebound. Gerics was fouled on the inbounds and he sank both free throws to lock up the win.
Coulter led Denison with 15 points on 5-7 shooting, all from beyond the arc. Freeman Brou scored 13 points in 31 minutes on 6-of-14 shooting. Gerics tallied 13 points in 22 minutes off the bench.
Oberlin (12-9, 6-8) was led by Joshua Friedkin who finished with 17 points.
The Big Red travel to the College of Wooster on Wednesday (Feb. 12) for an 8 p.m. tip against the Fighting Scots at Timken Gymnasium.
