Wooster ends Denison's NCAC tourney run

Box Score

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio— Denison's run in the 2020 North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament came to an end in the semifinals with a 74-62 loss at the hands of the College of Wooster on Friday night at Pam Evans Smith Arena.

Wooster's Danyon Hempy scored a game-high 26 points and was a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line.  It was a game of runs but Wooster closed out the contest on a 15-6 scoring run to lock up the victory.

Denison cut the Wooster lead to one with 12:22 left after a Matt Gerics driving layup but Hempy took charge, leading a 9-0 Wooster spurt that spanned only 58 seconds.  With the Scots on top 54-44, Denison rallied on 3-pointers from Kevin Cheng, who led all DU scorers with 18 points, and a triple by Gerics.  Two more baskets by Fenton and Cheng had Denison back to within two with seven minutes to play.

Wooster's runs were plenty and they came fast.  An 8-0 run by the Scots put them on top by 12 with 3:38 to play.  With Denison running out of time, the Scots outscored DU 8-6 down the stretch to close out the game.

Chech scored 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting. He was 4-for-4 from 3-point range and added three rebounds.  Conor Fenton capped off an outstanding conference tournament with 12 points and nine rebounds.  He also chipped in two steals and two assists.

Freeman Brou scored 10 points and had seven rebounds.

Denison's season comes to an end with a record of 11-16. This was the Big Red's fourth NCAC Final Four appearance in the last five seasons.  Wooster (20-7) advances to play top-seeded Wittenberg in Saturday's championship game at 4 p.m.
