Big Red outlasts Yeomen for first conference win

Box Score

OBERLIN, Ohio—Denison opened the new year with a 67-63 road win over Oberlin College to improve to 4-7 on the season.  Over the final six minutes of play, Denison outscored the Yeomen 12-8 to come away with the four-point victory.

After Oberlin's Charles Tiedemann tied the game at 55-55 with 6:15 to play, Denison senior Jack Coulter responded with a bucket in the paint to give his team a two-point lead.  A miss at the other end by Oberlin was followed by a loose ball foul on the Yeoman that sent Ben Stern to the line.  The junior connected on both to give DU a 59-55 lead.

With 3:35 remaining, Denison's Matt Gerics connected on a 3-pointer to go up five, but Oberlin responded with a transition dunk by Isaac Finestone.  Denison gathered themselves and it was Gerics who connected on a basket in traffic to push the lead back to five.

With 1:35 on the clock, Finestone's layup got the Yeomen to within one point of the lead.  After a Denison miss, Gerics bailed his team out with a critical steal that resulted in a shooting foul called on Kevin Cheng.  He split the pair at the line, giving the ball back to Oberlin with the score 65-63 in favor of DU.

Oberlin's attempt to tie the game was blocked by Conor Fenton and Coulter secured the rebound and was fouled with 14 seconds left.  Coulter made both charity tosses, extending the Denison lead to four.  Oberlin's final shot was blocked by Freeman Brou, to secure the Big Red's first conference win of the season.

Coulter scored 13 points to lead Denison in scoring.  Stern followed with 10 points in 19 minutes off the bench.  Gerics and Cheng both ended with nine points apiece.  Denison outrebounded Oberlin 42-32 as Fenton paced DU with seven.

The Big Red shot 40 percent from the field (25-of-63) while Oberlin shot 43 percent (23-53).

Denison (4-7, 1-3 NCAC) returns to Livingston Gymnasium on Wednesday, Jan. 8 when they host third-ranked Wittenberg at 7:30 p.m.
