Denison men take down CMU and Calvin

PITTSBURGH--  Denison men's swimming and diving took down a pair of top-15 opponents thanks to 10 event wins and four pool records.  The Big Red handed No. 10 Carnegie Mellon a 162-136 defeat and topped No. 15 Calvin College, 194-100.

Sophomore Richie Kurlich posted a pair of pool records in both breaststroke events.  Kurlich won the 100 breast in 56.76 and returned to win the 200 breast in 2:02.44.  He was also part of winning 200 medley and 200 free relay teams.  In the 200 free relay, the team of Trey Ike, Kymani Senior, Drake Horton, and Kurlich touched first with a new pool record time of 1:23.00.

The same foursome kicked off the meet with a winning time of 1:33.74 in the 200 medley relay.

Sophomore Noah Houskeeper continued his strong season with victories in the 200 fly and the 200 IM.  In the 200 fly he touched in 1:51.30 for a new pool record.  Mitch Williams followed in third-place in 1:52.82. In the 200 IM, it was Houskeeper and Williams who went 1-2 with times of 1:53.78 and 1:54.28, respectively.

Sophomore diver Liam Simmons swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events while posting qualifying scores for the 2020 NCAA Diving Regionals. On the 1-meter board, Simmons posted a six-dive score of 301.65.  He was even better on the 3-meter board, finishing with a winning score of 306.65.

In the 100 backstroke, Ike was a winner after hitting the wall in 50.75.  Sam Jo followed in third-place in 52.52.  Ike also recorded a runner-up finish in the 100 free after a time of 46.24.

Bebe Wang held off Jo to win the 200 backstroke in 1:51.81.  Jo took second in 1:53.77.  Wang also recorded a third-place finish in the 200 free in 1:43.12.

Senior logged a third-place finish in the 50 free in 21.57 and took fourth in the 100 fly with a time of 50.97.

Lukas Gately paced DU in the distance freestyle events, placing second in the 1000 free (9:53.07) and fourth in the 500 free in 4:45.50.

Denison returns to the Trumbull Aquatics Center on Friday, January 24 for a 5 p.m. meet against the University of Indianapolis.
