Big Red women's soccer falls in season opener

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va.—Bridgewater's Sydney Ryan broke a scoreless tie with 2:36 left in regulation and that was enough to send the Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Denison women's soccer from Watt Field in Lexington, Virginia.

It was an outstanding early-season test for both squads.  Denison is coming off a 12-3-2 season which saw them capture a North Coast Athletic Conference Championship.  Meanwhile, Bridgewater posted a 15-4-2 campaign in 2018, advancing to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

The Big Red outshot Bridgewater 18-7 until the game-winner developed in the waning moments of the match. Just prior to the goal, Denison's Meg Rogan had her shot from just outside the box saved by Eagle keeper Sydney Davis.

Davis quickly flipped the field and Bridget Fabiani threaded a through ball to Ryan who received the ball at the top of the 18 and sent a shot that found the back of the net.

Seven of Denison's 18 shots were on-goal as Davis ended with a clean sheet, seven-save afternoon.  Kelly O'Neill paced the Big Red with seven shots, four of which were on-frame.  Rogan, Claire Kolff and Leland Keller followed with two shots apiece.  Patil Tcholakian posted two saves for Denison.

The Big Red returns to the pitch in Lexington, Virginia on Saturday (August 31) when they take on tournament host, Washington and Lee at 2:30 p.m.
