No. 14 Denison overpowers Oberlin

Box Score

GRANVILLE, Ohio--  Peter Pittroff scored two goals and added five assists to lead No. 14 Denison to a 16-4 win over Oberlin College on Wednesday night at Piper Stadium.

The Yeomen came out of the gate with two quick goals from Matthew Barry and Tom Decker to take a 2-0 lead three minutes into the contest.

The Big Red got on the scoreboard with an unsettled goal by long pole Aidan O'Neill with 10:43 left in the first quarter.  That started a string of nine-straight goals by Denison and Pittroff had a hand in five of those nine tallies.

Denison took a 9-2 lead into halftime.  In the third quarter, Jake Waxter, Owen Armstrong and another goal by O'Neill gave DU a 12-3 lead.  While the offense was clicking thanks to Pittroff and company, the defense was suffocating.  They forced the Yeomen into seven possession clock turnovers and close defensemen Joseph Rochte and Richie Bartozzi combined for five caused turnovers.  Bartozzi also led all defensive players with five ground balls.

Reeves McKenney played three quarters in goal and made six saves.  Stephen Paras posted three saves in the fourth quarter.  The Big Red held a 37-25 advantage in shots and a 31-23 edge in ground balls.  Henry DeCamp was 10-of-13 facing off with six ground balls.

Eleven different players accounted for Denison's 16 goals.  Joining Pittroff and O'Neill with multi-goal performances was Wills Hutras (2 goals), Spencer Butler (2 goals, 1 assist) and Armstrong (2 goals).  Pittroff's seven points moved him into 10th place on Denison's career points list (187).  Additionally, Butler's first goal at 2:56 in the second quarter was the 150th of his career. He trails only Andy John (170) and Brady Burton (189) on Denison's career goal leaderboard.

Denison improves to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Oberlin drops to 3-6 and 0-2 in conference play.  Denison returns to Piper Stadium on Saturday (April 6) when they host Wabash College at 1 p.m.
