Denison capitalizes on JCU miscues in 15-6 victory

Box Score

UNIVERSITY HTS., Ohio--  Denison pounded out 12 hits and utilized an eight-run sixth inning to defeat John Carroll, 15-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Schweickert Field.  With the win, Denison improves to 28-3 heading into Wednesday's key regional matchup with Heidelberg in Granville.

Denison entered the game ranked seventh in the latest ABCA Division III Coaches Poll and ninth in the D3Baseball.com poll.  Big Red starter Will McManaman got the start and pitched a scheduled three innings of scoreless baseball.  He allowed two hits and walked one while striking out four.  He was credited for his sixth victory of the season.

McManaman left the game with a 3-0 lead thanks to a sacrifice fly by Grady Paine that scored Vince Walker and a two-out, two-run double by Will Krushena down the left field line to score Daniel Spencer and Max Lahn.

Taylor Perrett pitched the fourth and got two outs in the fifth before leading the game with a 4-1 lead with a runner on third.  Jack Arnstein entered and allowed an RBI single to Dominic Mittiga before fanning Aaron Zawadzki to end the threat.

In the top of the sixth, DU blew the game wide open thanks to four consecutive errors by the Blue Streaks to start the inning.  All eight of Denison's runs in the inning were unearned.  Krushena did the most damage with a two-run home run to center, scoring Spencer.

Denison took a 12-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth and never looked back.

Krushena, who had his 28-game hitting streak snapped in the opening game of Saturday's doubleheader against Ohio Wesleyan, went 3-for-5 with four RBIs and one run scored.  Ty Robinson was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored.  Spencer had the second three-hit game of his young career. He drove in two and scored one run.

The win marked No. 181 for head coach Mike Deegan at Denison.  He is one victory shy of tying Barry Craddock (182 wins) for the most in program history.  His .653 (181-96) winning percentage is the best in program history.

The first pitch in Wednesday's game against Heidelberg is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Big Red Field. Tune in to the Denison Sports Network at 4:45 p.m. to watch the live broadcast.
